AGP 2x/4x device in AGP 1x/2x slot?

Hi,

I have an Asus P2B-DS motherboard, with (I think) a 1x/2x AGP slot, and I want to get the ATI Radeon All-in-Wonder 32MB video card for it -- specs for this card state AGP 2x/4x. Will this device work properly coupled with my Asus motherboard? Does the slot accept 1x or 2x devices, and is the ATI card a 2x or 4x device?

How can I find out what X the Asus mobo will support? I can't seem to find it in the documentation -- could this simply be an AGP 1x slot?

Thanks,
Mentallo

Asus P2B series is the i440BX chipset, AGP2x.

The Radeon is a double notched universal AGP connector, 1x, 2x or 4x. It will work fine in your board.

Biggs: I wasn't actually Referring to the Radeon, AFIAK the Radeon is fine. The 3dfx V3 and V5 wouldn't work on the i850...something to do with voltage I think...not sure exactly, I'm not terribly interested in the i850...

it won't fit in an i850? Didn't know that...

Actually an AGP 2x/4x card WILL work on the i850
The only card that will not work on the i850 is the AGP 1x/2x card.

i850 REQUIRES 1.5volt AGP. AGP4x MUST BE 1.5volt, therefore anything that has AGP4x is going to work on the i850.

Then why won't the V5-5500 work? I"m pretty sure it didn't work in the i850...maybe I'm wrong...oh well I'll live.

<< but what is the performance loss from 4x to 2x with modern cards I wonder? >>

pretty much nothing. Games aren't complex enough yet that they need AGP...AGP was designed to give fast access to main memory for texture storage, but most games' textures aren't so complex that they won't fit into the video card's local memory. But it will come....

pretty cool. I got the card from buy.com with some $30 off coupon. Easy installation, works great with win2k. Now I have to figure out how to do a decent video capture without eating up so much hard drive space. I was able to make a 115MB file of 640x480 video from a video tape.

Thanks again for all the responses.
