Agony is watching a Southerner try and use an ATM.

Oh it's painful. You know that if there are two people in front of you at the ATM it's better to just get in the car and drive on. Something about intelligently navigating a device with a screen and buttons (tv & remote notwithstanding) seems lost to most of them. People here still use cheques. To pay for groceries. Hell, I still see people here doing fairly large cash purchases of things. Ever heard of a bank account?

The true pain though comes from standing behind somebody at the self-checkout in home depot, walmart, etc. Of course most of the time at Walmart the customers would rather stand in a long line up than fumble around the ridiculously well-made user interface of the self checkout. But, sometimes, Leanne leaves the farm and thinks she done gonna have a good go at this here self checkout and although it don't make much sense to 'er, it sure is a perty an' fancy thing to buy the grits with!

I see people use checks here as well. Something with being able to make the line behind you wait for 5 minutes must be extremely gratifying.

You always have the option of shopping where you get good service!

If you want the cheapest price, you can't be surprised when it is not a pleasant shopping experience.

Peoplse use cheques at all stores here! And banks don't screen customers for technical proficiency, so regardless of bank I'm still liable to be behind somebody who's never used an ATM before (or acts as if they've not).

What really ticks me off are those who decide to use the express lane, and then whip out their checkbook! :| Uh, hello? It's called an express lane for a reason, for those of us who would rather not spend massive amounts of time waiting to check out the few items we're buying...

Inconsiderate morons... :disgust:

Sometimes I prefer using checks because it gives me "evidence" that my payment was accepted.

Oh I agree with you on that. I write maybe one or two checks per year these days. I just said that to correct your spelling of checks :p;)

Oops I forgot I was in america, where the subtle nuances of language are lost on the masses and "cheque" just doesn't make sense :D I'm surprised psychiatrist still starts with a p here and not a 'si'!

cheque? You ain't in Canada anymore :D

As a Southerner I'm inclined to agree some of these people make me shake my head, especially those that can't scan in their own groceries at the self check outs, plus those that go there with a full cart of groceries complete with coupons and a child playing keep away with various items in need of being rang up. I have on more than one occasion even seen someone swiping their atm/credit cards backwards with the magnetic strip towards them numerous times and act confused as to why it is not accepting it.

i tried using the self-checkout at home depot the other day but i was buying a snow shovel(thankfully) and 2 garbage cans and none of my items fit over the scanner so i had to eventually key them in but there was some issue with the need for some item to be in the bagging area and eventually a cashier had to use a hand scanner to read in the items. luckily it was already about 11pm so there weren't other customers behind me.

Yeah the self checkout stations at home depots are lame as hell. 80% of the time, they don't work.

bahahahaha...damn the canadians :).

Try standing behind a 80 year old guy depositing 10+ checks in individual envelopes. I was stuck behind him where he had to retrieve his ATM card after each deposit and start from scratch. The jackass didn't know you can do it all without having to logout and login again. I am in Northeast which goes to show you there are dumb people everywhere :).

Man, you think that's brutal? When I was a wee pup (19) one of my duties working at Scotiabank was trying to introduce people to using ATMs. You wouldn't believe how righteous the old fogies would get when I asked whether they had ever looked into using an ATM (24 hour service! Much shorter lines!) or Internet banking (24 hour service! No line! Bank naked!). You'd think I had just asked them what their sister's p00n tasted like. :Q

The age of cheques is coming to a close. Get with the program people. You shouldn't be able to claim ignorance to the developments of the past century just because you're a freaking Civil War veteran.

Until I'd come to the US (aparently it's not so bad in some other states) i'd thought the use of cheques had already come to a close. Nobody in nova scotia in my recent memory has used a cheque to pay for anything in front of me. They use debit for the majority of transactions or credit card. The fact is almost all merchants in canada do not even accept cheques!

Walmart is going to limit ATM/Debit card usage(MasterCard only for now). You will be able to use them but will have to punch in your pin instead of being able to use it as CC and just sign.

No, agony is watching a clueless baby-boomer trying to purchase an ink cartridge for their printer at OfficeMax, relying on the expertise of an equally clueless CSR that until recently had spent their entire life in a rural Alaska village with no running water, and who displays obvious signs of self-mutilation on her forearms.
