aghhh! My dell 20" LCD has just developed red streaks...

I just noticed today that about 1.5" away from the left size, there are a 150-200 vertical pixel width lines going down my screen. Each vertical line has a pixel spacing between them. The total width of the vertical collection of red streaks is about 1.5" width.

It showed up this morning, but it was light and went away. Tonight it showed up again, but then went away. Now it's back and staying.

I know it's the monitor since I test both DVI and VGA cables from my desktop. I also tested with VGA from my laptop. The red lines are not from graphics card or video cables.

Is there anything I can do? I will call Dell and see if it's still under service and see when I bought it, probably at least a couple of years ago. Anything to test?

I will shut down soon and hope that it'll be gone tomorrow morning and remain gone.

I guess you are using a 2001FP? I had the same problem start up about 2 months ago on my 2001FP but on the right hand side. My vertical lines were multi-colored and would eventually turn solid black so I could not see anything on the right hand side (~2 inches). I tested every which way to make sure it was the monitor...and it was.

My monitor was just barely over the 3 year warranty so basically I was out of luck. I did some research and it seems like a "common" problem with the 2001FP. I ended up buying a new 26" DoubleSight monitor. It is awesome!!

Oh and the problem on the Dell 2001FP would go away if I turned the computer off but it would always show back up...sometimes it would take only a few minutes other times it might take an hour to show back up.

I tried blowing dust out with a hair dryer, on cool air setting. Didn't really work. I also checked at 5am and lines/bars were almost immediately on the screen. I checked again at 8am and the lines were feint, but would get darker over the course of a minute or so.

Thanks for letting me know about the warranty. I didn't realize it was a 3year warranty, unless that was optional. I hope I bought it with a credit card that extends it by an extra year.

TrentJ, what made you go for the DoubleSight? I've been eyeing the Dell UltraSharp 24" for years and now I might have to get it. Maybe, if there is no way for me to fix my problem. Interestingly, my LCD monitor purchases have all been in the $600 range. My Planar 17" LCD years and years ago.. then then Dell 20" LCD.. and maybe the Dell 24" LCD.. Ouch! That just reminds me of how much I'm spending on them...

I think the three year warranty is standard for a Dell LCD. Do all credit cards extend it by a year? I will have to check into that.

The DoubleSight is by far the best monitor for the money...that is if you plan on spending that much money (~$650 to $700). Check out the forum at Hardforum.com. The Dells seem to have problems with lag for games so that is why I stayed away from them.

There is also a video on youtube with the vertical bar problem on the 2001FP. Do a quick search on there and you will find it.

American Express Blue offers the extension. I think it's a little more popular now and other credit cards offer it too. I'm on hold with Dell now. Unfortunately I don't have any information that could help them locate my account/purchase quickly.

Call took 25 minutes, but I finally got my info. Ordered in 2005. I guess around the same time you did. I now have to check with American Express to see if I purchased it with them.

edit: I didn't get to talk to tech support, or rather I did but I made the mistake of asking for warranty info first and she quickly said she'd transfer me and before I could say something I was put on hold/transfer. I didn't want to wait the quoted '10+ minutes', so I'll try them later in the day.

Turned my computer on, after not using it since morning. It showed faint bars during bootup. Afterwards it went away.. I spoke too soon. After a minute, it's fading in and out now. I'm going to contact American Express extend warranty services and see what I need to do.

Same exact problem as mine. It would come and go depending on how long I had the monitor turned off. Just go ahead and get the DoubleSight 🙂, you won't regret it!!!
