Aggrevation with Router!!

I cannot get my Linksys BEFSR41 router to work with my Win XP Pro...

The router works ( tried it a friend's ) and my cables are fine. All lights on the router shows it should be fine ( Wan ok, computer ok ). I can ping the router, and I can use the cable connection fine if I unplug the router and go straight from the cable modem to my computer.

I think I have tried every possible combination of software setting and it is just not working. I have read the FAQ's, done XP's trouble shooting/repair and what not. I tried Linksys set up program and I get to the point where it tries the connection throught the router. There it stops and tells me I have no cable connection between my computer and the router#!@#!@$??

I have a 3Com 3C905C-TX netwrok card ( yes I know they are trouble but it works fine as I said if I avoid going through my router ).

I had this all working a few months ago but after trying to add another machine running 98SE it has all been downhill. I would now happily settle for having my XP machine only working through the router.

One thign that I do not understand is the if I click on properties under my "My Network Places" I get to "icons" one is called "1394 connection" ( it is disabled but I do not see its use and should have it removed? but I cannot figure out how) The other is called "Local Area Connection". This latter is my 3Com card. The first one tells me it would "Connect using: 1394 Net adapter" under properties. Could this be something built into my mobo?

Any idea to something that I may have missed would be appreciated.

What are all the settings(just in case....don't post your username and password), router and pc's ip info. Are you using the router as a dhcp server, have you tried resetting the router to defaults and loading the setup again? does your nic point to the router as the gateway server? etc. etc.

I have tried the factory default. It is set to DHCP and gateway ( I have tried router setting too). I do not have fixed IP.
What do you mean "does my nic point to my router as the gateway server"? How do I check that besdies what I said about what it says under properties under "my network places"?

I know this is vague but trust me I have tried every possible combination that I can think of and to spell them all out would take 4 pages.

One more thing that I do find peculiar though is that I called my ISP ( comcast) and they say I do need to put in naythign under "host" and "domain". When it used to be @Home I had to have those settings filled in for it to work. The phone rep however claimed that this has changed and I do not need them anymore. Could he have been confused?

Clone the MAC address of your computer that works when directly attached to the cable modem into the router. Do this under the advanced settings.

That did it. I did not even know how to do it until I found it in the manual. It certainly is not obvious that you can change that setting on the router setup page...
