Agent newsreader locking up

I have a rather unusual problem. I use the Agent news reader and subscribe to Remarq for unfilted binaries. However, when downloading headers, Agent will frequently lock up. Eventually I have to end the ctl-alt-del to break the app. But when I used Free Agent, there were no problems. Unfortunately, FA is a far inferior product so I don't want to use it.

Any ideas why Agent would lock up and how to get around it? Any recommendations for a better news reader?
 
some newsreaders will lock up on groups that have very large number of headers or indexes. Mine lock up on 300,000 headers or so.
