Ahhh dammit. They let me add it to my cart and check out but they require that I have a US address tied to my credit card. What the hell? Oh well, they're probably doing me a favor anyway with this game.

Through Games for Windows
Go to: https://www.gamesforwindows.com
Click on the Microsoft Game Studios and AoE3 is there for $0.10, go and checkout and there you go.

I just bought it and am DL'n it now.

You sure about this?? Was it a limited time deal or something??? I just went there and the price is 39.99 for the complete set. I would like to pick up the game, as my AOE 3 disks will no longer load as the disk is damaged somehow. But I would not be willing to pay more than a few dollars.

Add it to your cart and then go to checkout. The price should be 10 cents there.

Placed order yesterday, used my paypal debit card, MS.NET made two transactions, first one was for $1.00 of which I have no idea what was for. And the second was for my AOE III purchase of $.10. I also got an email from MS with my billing statement of .10 but nothing about the 1.00 charge.

On their website, it shows my card being charged .10 by them, again not the 1.00. So I removed my card and said F dat.

Also, after downing the 2GB of data, its now asking for a CD key so its still useless, what a pain. Guess this was a way for them to get a bunch of suckers, and sadly, I was one of them! I heard of others who keep getting charged various amounts by the same MS.NET after making a purchase like this in the past.

Buyers beware!

The one dollar is just an authorization charge. It is a place holder that companies use to verify the authentisity of the card, it doesn't stick around, and it would have been removed by the credit card company once they got around to it (It usually takes less than a week).

I am a little surpised you haven't seen this before. It is very common to see these $1 authorization charges from gas stations when you pump gas. Also, you usually see it when you buy something from a new online store.

I assume it was a one day deal or something? I'm seeing it for $39.99. Was hoping to get my friend to finally buy it.

Edit: Damn, I was seeing the $0.10 price on Chrome, switched to IE to sign into stupid GFWL, and then it's back to $39.99. :(

Man, I should have held off buying the game 5 years ago. Could have gotten it for 10 cents.

Warcraft? Warcraft was barely an actual RTS, it was more of an RPG than an RTS...child please...

wat?

you must be limited to warcraft 3.

starcraft was nothing but a clone of warcraft 2.

warcraft 2 > warcraft 3.

dude, that $1 charge is for verification. Almost everyone does this. I like how you go straight to "SCAM!"

Is this your first time using a cc?

:hmm:

Not to mention the fact that although the Age of Empires series was one of the pillars of modern RTSs, AoE3 was, regardless of its own merits, not in line with the rest of the games. Different game dynamics, no unit formations, the addition of home cities. You want to take a game that is more RPG than RTS. Compared to AoE1 and 2, AoE3 is practically unrecognizable.

As for older RTSs that helped to define the genre... Warcraft 1, Dune, C&C and Red Alert, AoE 1, these were what defined the genre. However, I think that it was the second generation that really shined. AoE2 was an improvement in almost every way over the first, Red Alert 2 remains to this day one of my favorite games and Warcraft 2 was simply amazing.
