Well, it's likely a legacy of an earlier time when babies and youth died more easily.

Even Alabama has an age of consent of 16.

you know the good thing about this thread?

I can now admit that I was born and partially raised in AL w/out the attendant shame.

OK, w/o MOST of the attendant shame. Folks are still going to assume I'm a racist xenophobe, so you all are among the privileged few to know my deep, dark (but not in a racist way) secret.

Oh, so now we know you got an accent like the scientist in the Skinwalker Ranch documentary.

Nope, no accent. Mom is 100% eye-talian but born in PA and raised in NJ. And the area of AL I'm from is a bit more british than southern drawl.

Cool story - I with one of the exes in Miami i think and we went to this revolving restaurant. This was about 30 years ago. Our waitress came over, said a few things and I say, you're from Dothan arent' you? Nailed it. Not the waitress tho.
