Agarest is surprisingly fun.

But theres a lot of annoying cinematics, and battles can sometimes feel tedious.

However theres a crapload of equipment and abilities, and quite a few unlock-able special & combination attacks. Its very satisfying to organize your group and get 10 hits on one monster.

I played maybe 10 minutes of this to try it out, but as you said, the battles felt tedious. I do plan on going back eventually but seems like a game I really have to invest some time into. I see on PSN there are like 4 of these games.

Steam only has one. It runs very well, and has controller support.

I also got the DLC which gave me some awesomely powerful weapons. I dont think I should use them.

I spent many, many hours playing the 360 version of the game. Earned 1 of the 2 endings I wanted...but saved over my "safe" save, where I could put in minimal effort to get the 2nd ending. If I wanted to get it, with the saves I have left, would have been at least another 15-20 hours, most likely, so I couldn't make myself go back and do it. The game is seriously long, at 5 generations (+, if you manage to unlock the true ending)

I'd like to rebuy the game on the pc, but I know there is no way I could go back and sink that much time into the game again, heh. Heck, the first Agarest game is the only one I've actually managed to finish yet. And I'd still like to go back and finish them all one day.

OK, I went back to it again, finally got the hang of combo attacks and now I'm really enjoying things.
Also figured out the enhancing and converting system, getting plenty of good items.

i love me some Turn Based tactics. so i started playing this weekend. it's nice, reminds me of Disgaea games which i loved.
should i have all my chars with high AGI and their respective STR/INT attributes and just forget about the rest? (LUK/VIT)
also, there are a lot of stats that the game doesn't explain. for instance when i look at an ability's detail screen, how can i know if its better than an other ability? what determines how much damage it does? now i'm just doing trial/error.
also the basic combo doesn't seem very AP efficiant (double slash/power attack) it seems that if i do double slash twice i do more damage for the same AP.

Double slash twice is a combo attack, its called Quadra slice and does loads of bonus damage.

The real benefit of combos is when you arrange your team in such a way they can share attacks. You just click on each portrait and pick the skill you want.

I've executed 4 stage combo attacks that way, and it only used a little AP from each person. When the combo was done each of them still had plenty left to do independent attacks.
