First of all i should mention that i am a complete excel layman.

K this is what i have to do:
I have columns several thousand units long and 1 unit wide (dont know if it's the right terminalogy buy i think you understand)

The columns are
filled with single letters like so:
w
b
s
d
h
s

Now i need to count up the amount of times that a letter apears in each coulumn so i should have a resulting table that says something like W-3 H-4 Z-0 etc.

Here is a screen shot of the spreadsheet:

To count the number of times a "W" appears in Column C, use this formula: =countif(C:C,"W")

and i should simply repeat that formula or every possible letter?
(i have 21 variations)

If i post that formula from one column to another the vlaue c would change respectivly with the column?

Thanks

use the function "COUNTIF" like the following:

Let's say you have a column named "D" and it goes from row 2 - 200.

to have excel count the number of times a letter "f" appears in column D and show the result in a cell, use the following formula:

=COUNTIF($D$2:$D$200, "f")

I tend to put "$" to make it more readable.
