Aftermarket Infrared Night Vision Camera: Predator vision for your car

I will consider buying one once the price goes down to around $1000.00 or so.
Also, how do you install it in your car so that it won't get stolen?

Otherwise it looks like a good product with great potential...

do want. i could have used it last year when i hit a deer 🙁

What I would like to see is an all in one unit with infrared, mp3 player, ipod link, navi and maybe dvd player dash unit...
It would be sweet...
Sorry about your crash btw.

That's so sweet!

I'll buy it when they figure out how to make it into a hud for the windshield.

IIRC, Cadillac did FLIR with an HUD about 5-10 years ago, but it flopped and the stopped offering it

Wonder why?
Prolly because of a poor execution. Seems like a great concept.

It's been out for a while. Chrysler's MyGig with Nav would fit and adding the front IR camera should be no problem.

Wouldn't a surplus nightvision goggle be cheaper?

What kind of nightvison goggles? The cheap ones intensify light, which could be a problem with incoming cars turning on their headlights. Thermal imaging technology is still very expensive.

I have a pair of these on my hummer. I use it during my border runs. Headlights off, Border patrol generally doesn't know I'm there until I'm already a few yards from their checkpoint and they can never catch me.

I think it was a $2000 option back around 2000-2001. I don't remember hearing anything negative about it in the reviews, I think it was just not very popular. I think it was just a bit to gadgety to be successful with Cadillac's customer base.

I doubt it's very helpful. Like someone said, you would need it in a HUD with good peripheral coverage. Even then, distinguishing distances to hot objects is still difficult.

It's a novelty. Invest in better headlights if you have trouble seeing at night.

I seriously doubt it was HUD that overlaid the outside world the same way that a fighter pilot's HUD would indicate / track a target. To do this, you'd have to track the eyes / head location of the driver to get the perspective correct. I'd suspect that it just displayed a small video overlay on the windshield of the infrared view in front of the car.

I think that problem was that instead of being a HUD overlay of the actual road, it was a small image at the bottom that was magnified. Which meant that any time you were going around a corner or on a bumpy road it became a useless blur.

I want a full-windscreen HUD overlay, with IR, speeds of the cars around you (if there's a car stopped in the road, it can be a different color than cars going your speed), and of course radar detection. That would be sweeet.

FWIW, I did a couple experiments once when I was driving late at night with a full moon. Since there was no other traffic, I turned off my headlights. Sure enough, I could see MUCH more of the road when I didn't have that bright spot right in front of the car to wash out my vision. Of course, other cars wouldn't have been able to see me, so I could only get away with it because the road was empty and there was a moon. Still...headlights are indeed blinding and reduce the distance that you can see.

Another answer is just to have a really good set of spotties mounted up high on a roo-bar, you can see for kms at night that way, and get a good broad spread of light. Of course, when you dip to low-beam you can't see sh1t for about five minutes.

Maybe just one eye then 🙂

$2200+ option on the BMW 5&7-series... this plus the active cruise (automatic braking) were 2 things I wanted but not offered for the X - they are extremely pricey for what they are anyway. Would've added like $5k just for these 2 gadgets. I seriously would've considered the active cruise with the long island distressway here though.
