Aftermarket DVD burner question

Does the NEC ND-6650 fit into the IBM T40 series? I don't really want to spend the 300 that Luvono\IBM wants for theirs.

Only if it fits into, and you have, the IBM/Lenovo caddy that holds it.

No, the NEC ND-6650 will not fit the IBM T4x series. It is 12.7mm thick. The ultrabay slim slot only accepts 9.5mm thick drives. It does fit the T2x and T30 series.

Anyone running one of these in a T23? Does this require replacing the faceplate or does it fit right in without modification...?

I have used the older 6500 in a T23 and it works great.
You will need to either replace the faceplate or cut a notch in the lower right corner of the NEC faceplate to fit in the T23. You will also need the back connector and side rails from an existing ultrabay drive to attach to the NEC drive. You will also need an updated burning program that recognizes the drive.
