I was just wondering if anybody is using aftermarket cooling for the 4870? I know people modded solutions for the 4850. The card runs very hot and summer is in full swing so I was looking for a "cool" solution.

I currently have a 4850 but wanted to grab a 4870 only if it doesnt turn this room into a boiler.

If you are using anything please give me some feedback on the heat output.

thanks!

Hey Deep,

Albeit I'm having other "issues" with my 4870 with 3dmark just the Fan Mod (barely a fan mod basically changing 23% to 65% in the script) made my temps go down 30-40C no joke.

This is at 790/1100 OC, the farthest you can OC using the ATI tool.

Now if your going past that with another third party program then probably want Ram sinks etc.

Artic Cooling is supposed to be releasing thier "offical" cooler for the 50/70 later this month. Should be around $30.

Their 4870 cooler is really efficient, you won't something much better unless you buy the TR one that eats up three slots.

Also, no matter what cooler you use, your room will heat up the same, it's just the card that changes temperature. In fact, a lower case temp means the hot air is being exhausted into your room faster.

exact same here. ATI overdrive lets you hit the max allowed easily.

setting up a profile and changing the fan speed % and setting it to manual works wonders. I went from 80 idle, down to 55 idle. and 95 load, down to 80 load.

That is at max overclock, and and 40% fan speed.

Just be aware that the fan is really really loud. 40% is quite loud but i can live with it. I tried it at 100% and my wife in teh next room was complaining, I had to yell to her to be heard.

I have never done water cooling, but I am tempted to try it on this beast just for the experience of doing it.

The Accelero S1 fits great on a 4850 which should have the same pcb as the 4870. Under load my 4850 would not break 50C. I'll be throwing the same cooler on my 4870 and I'll let you know how it does. IMO its the best bang for your buck gpu cooler out there. Strap a 120mm fan or two onto it and you're good to go.

From the looks of it, the 4850 isnt going to run any cooler than the 4870 as far as heat output goes.

If there was only a way to output this hot air directly outside lol

That looks pretty sweet. Do you have one or are those tests done by a review site? It seems like a new product so I cant even find a price on it.
