Maybe they're not "playing" - maybe they really are just completely psychotic. Some genetic abnormality manifested itself eons ago, and never went away. Now they roam the sea as deranged killers. They don't kill us right away because they sense that we're smart. They will wait until the right time to strike. Suddenly being tossed 40-50 feet into the air will be the least of our worries. Just you watch. Yeah, go to Sea World, look at the cute Killer Whales. The whale "trainers" aren't training the whales - they're training YOU to accept your new masters.

(Moral: they say "Planet Earth" a lot in each episode.)
