After running DiskInventoryX, found the 1.5.6 combo update

I already deleted the original installer I used to install the update, so I'm not sure why there is another copy stored here.

The update was already installed, so do I still need this .pkg? A .pkg is nothing more than an installer, correct?

It's taking up almost 700MB and my netbook only has ~15GB available, so I'm trying to get off to a clean start

You could try and see... just make a time machine backup first.

Good idea, I'll go grab an external drive I guess. I wonder how much they are for 1 or 1.5TB

I've seen some as low as $99 for a 1TB, but if you're grabbing one at BestBuy or Fry's, you'll probably be in the $150 range.
