After reading a lot of postedmessages.... best advice for linux newbies is to.....

In conclusion, the best way to start linux is to start using, debian or slackware which are robust distros, kind of hard to use which obligates a newbie to learn.

And for books get running linux 3rd edition from O'reily and linux in a nutshel from O'reily, for howto's use linuxnewbie.org there should be good links in that site too.

Any other suggestion?

You might also want to hangout in the linux newsgroups (or irc channels) some too. They're really helpful as well and are usually much more specialized than this forum.

I agree with teh books but not the distros. If you're dead set on learning alot right off the bat fine pick the hardest distro you can find. If you' want a more pleasant experience, get your feet wet with one distro and then try others and see what you like. I started dabling in linux 2 years ago with slackware. Within the past 30 days I've had the latest slack and debian on my computer. I still prefer redhat, version 6.2 is just nice. Its a server that has no x components so I wouldn't say its not keeping me from learning either.
