nic works, router works...but they don't work together.

i have 2 pc's setup on a linksys 4 port router with cable. after the strike one box no longer was connected to network(taskbar icon indicated as much). So i connected that pc directly to the cable modem, and it worked fine. But when i plug it up to the router, i get a blinking light on the router port indicator. the other pc works fine on the router. i tried resetting everthing, switched out the cables, ports, checked for bangs in device manager, updated firmware, nic driver etc etc, but it won't work.

i don't understand how they both work seperately but not together. could the lightning half fried something?

wtf?!?!

Check your settings on the nic and/or router. Make sure both are half or full duplex. Also, did you try the other pc on the exact port that is not working? One of your ports might be fried while the other router ports work fine.

I have a Linksys 4 port router that I replaced thanks to a storm earlier in the year. It was even plugged in to a fairly decent UPS but lightning still caused damage. Immediately following the storm I was having connectivity problems with 1 LAN port and the WAN port. The light would stay steady but connectivity was flaky. Fortunately it was a piece of work equipment and I just replaced it and that solved all the problems. It wasn't only mine as we've replaced several of them for our home office users over the last few months. I've found that unit to be very sensitive to strikes, surges, etc...

but how does that explain how the router works fine on one pc, but not the other? i can plug the same cable(to same port) into one pc and it works fine, but not in the other.

Like I said...replacing my router after lightning hit solved a lot of my strange network problems :) I dunno... have you tried putting the cable that is going from the working PC to the router on the PC that currently does not work plugged into the router? I know you said you swapped out some cables but all I can think is that: if you have 1 PC w/ 1 NIC and 1 cable that is working fine, then you take another PC w/ NIC and another cable and connect it, then it doesn't work, it's like ScrapSilicon said...must be the PC. Again, I'm probably swinging in the dark, but could it be some DHCP issue or something else? Could the router actually be reserving or holding the IP that PC that doesn't work may be trying to claim? I dunno...baffles me.
