After Hal.dll missing/corrupt error...

Hey all,

I've got a Windows 2003 Server machine. Someone tried to install Peachtree on it, but was not successful due to an error they said which was insufficient priviledges or something along those lines.

That was on a Friday.

Monday now, users come back to work, all word/excel/pdf/and alot of other file types on the system are corrupted and are opening up with gibberish. The system was restarted and then the hal.dll missing/corrupt error came up.

That was replaced from the cd using the expand command, but now windows just hangs during the win2k3 logo and progress bar.

If the drive is slaved on another pc, all the files showing up as corrupted have been last modified/accessed on the Saturday night between 12 and 6am....

Any idea what, if anything, can be done, and also what may have caused such a problem?
 
From the description of events, any chance the install media wasn't 'original' and a file infecting virus was introduced?
 
I'm going to get my hands on the CD that was used tomorrow hopefully. I wasn't around when the installation was being done (the client only called me in after this happened) so I'm not sure if they were using an original or copied version of Peachtree.

Backup is available but whoever was incharge of that didn't do any recent ones... latest is from Feb. this year so that's another downer.
