Has Google really made any of its own software to date?

Yes. toolbar (not really standalone) and Desktop Search (desktop.google.com).

Other than add-ons to other software?

yes, desktop search is stand alone. it just searches your cache for it's data.

ICQ, AIM, MSN, YAHOO... too many more is not better but I can't say any one service is heads and tales above any other. Personally I've fealt that ICQ has been the superior IM service being one of the most flexible (and wide spread), but all of the default programs for all services are bloated and full of crap and whore resources. If Gmail did create something clean and efficient as well as hihgly functional and customizable...I would definately consider.

Just use AIM Ad Hack to get rid of all the ads. That's what I do. But I've tried to get people to switch from AIM to something else. Pretty much impossible. AIM has the instant messenging with a choke hold.

That, or put their adserver address in your restricted sites list so AIM can't download the ads.

i mentioned this in another thread but google should set up a....

Jabber server!

everybody who has a gmail account could sign into googles jabber without registering. also some how it can be tied into giving you email alerts/news/everything

google woulnt even need to make their own client since Jabber is already made BUT if the user wants some new google-only functions google can release their version with the email alerts/news/whatever built in.

google COULD mine all the IMs for ad data unless... end to end encryption was on  things like downhill battle gaim plugins would become a lot easier in jabber world especially with everything encrypted...

Wow Just what we need another IM to deal with. I just wish the ones that are out now would all work properly
LOL
