I think this is the biggest reason why I don't give any hand-outs to the homeless. They just want your money and when they get it, they're ungrateful. If you want to give money to the needy, treat yourself at a local strip-club. The girls only want your money, they're ungrateful when they get it, but at least you get a cheap feel out of it. 
But like I said above, some of these people are not homeless, they are making a good living off of suckers like you, and meanwhile your local food bank is probably hurting for money to help the real needy.
When I worked at a restaurant, I was on good terms with the manager and the expo, so I'd always get the "Dead" food -- sometimes I'd come away with 3 or 4 full entrees and a couple pieces of cheescake. Well, there was a guy who would hang out on the street median near the signal and I'd always hook him up with a dollar or some food. He REALLY appreciated it and was this old, gruff guy with a ZZ-Top beard. You know someone's not just there for the money when you see them standing with a sign at 2:30AM on a wednesday in 40 degree weather.
You should have told them that they would have to fight each other before you gave them your money.

Don't ever do that. Regardless of what they say, they do not want food. Offering it to them will only expose their lie and piss them off. If you want to give to the real homeless, contribute to a real charity. Do not give your money to panhandlers.
But a lot of them are, and several food banks have quotas after which they have to cut off support to certain people. I know. My aunt runs one.
I help this group feed homeless people in downtown Omaha on Mondays, and not once have we had people throw food. They've been extremely grateful for what they get. No complaints, and the conversation is unexpectedly good. You wouldn't believe the intelligence some of these people have, nor the stupidity of others. A wider spectrum I have never seen.
That's a pretty sweeping statement. I've taken plenty of homeless beggars into restaraunts to get food before. Many have graciously accepted my offer and I'll feed them. Some have denied me though. I'd say the ratio for eaters to noneaters has been about 50/50 for me. When they do take me up on a meal, I really enjoy helping them out. I also like getting to know who they are and what their story is.

Yeah, I've never given them money. Parents never give them money. If anything, I'd give them an apple or something.

you could have walked them to a nearby fastfood joint and order food for them. once they get their food, run before they start asking for drinks ;-)

she turned around and shouted mucho ass loud about how she can do whatevr she liked with her
money...blah-blah...
another one i gave money to ...handed her some $$ and said 'good luck'..she fuking turned hostile
and asked me like 'why?...do i look like i need good luck?...' ..just bcoz u gave me some $$...blah-blah...
i say fuxk them..no more money from me.

One of my friends will only give them money if they admit that they are going to spend it on alcohol or drugs.
He could be like me. I'm a lot more comfortable in 40 degree weather than I am in 70 degree weather.
Umm do what I do, give them canned food, I like to do it as I am driving by, toss it out either the sun roof or the window at about 35mph or so. Totally cathes them off guard, and is quite amusing (childish I know, but don't knock it untill you've tried it!)
I never give money to them. If they want food I'll buy them the food but I wont add to their drug or alchohol problem. And most of the time when you offer to do that they wont accept it :Q
fonz, I commend you on your graciousness. It is a law that you have to protect yourself from those you help. They are in need because they are needy. Their need makes them cruel. It's perfectly normal and to be expected. One of the best personality types for a giver is to be haughty and generous. Haughtiness erects a psychic barrier to retaliation. Also a helper is never concerned with thanks. The light that shines in the giver's heart is sufficient for a world.
Once a while I gave money to the homeless as well.. just to help them out.
Past weekend I spent my spring break up in Berkeley visiting some friends of mine. I was walking out of Top Dog and there is a homeless guy sitting there asking for changes. I take a look at him and I just say go find a job! He looked young!! 20-30s. I was like WTF go find a job flipping burgers or something instead of just sitting there and begging for money. :| he got mad at me and told me to fvck off! :| I just walked away cuz there are some other homeless people around and I don't want to make a scene and get jumped by bunch of homeless people
