I will usually give them food, or take them to 7-11 or fast food joints to buy them food. I will NEVER give them money, as I have been told by homeless people what they do with the money get (I used to volunteer at homeless shelter). Remember people, it's not a good idea to be mean to them because these people are desperate and they can do anything to you without giving a second thought. If you must decline, do so politely.

if you're feeling really generous, tell them you'll buy 'em a cheap burger at the local store (if it's within walking distance). if they insist on cash, it's probably for booze or drugs.

Hehe bad mistake giving money. They will usually by booze or drugs with it. During college one year I left a 7-11 and had a snapple on me. One guy asked me for money because he was thirsty, hadn't had anything to drink all day. So I give him my snapple drink. What does he do with it? When I hand him the drink and walk away, i turn around and see him throw it into the trash can!

If you feel the need, give to a charity.

After you've traveled in a few 3rd world countries you don't have much sympathy for the bums in the U.S.
They've got all the opportunity in the the world.

Ask him to recommend you a fancy place to eat. You'll be surprised what he knows about.

Ask him HOW he knows.

because the "fancy" places throw out the most food. If you goto bk, you usually end up eating everything you order since you order everything piece by piece. fancier, upscale places will serve you 7 course meals and often, you'll pass on a course or two if you're not hungry. The sheer volume of food left over would astound you.

Anyways...there's only 1 homeless person I will give money to. And that's because I know he at least tries to keep himself clean and he knows EVERYTHING about NYC. I could ask him the most inane, out of the planet question about places to eat, good places to shop, events, and he'll tell me. I think it's cuz he reads leftover papers in his free time...which is free research for me!

Maybe you just learned to not give them anything in the future.

Give the other guy the money. The guy who complained just needs to be happy. People these days

your lucky he didn't get physical and try and rob you..

it made me sad for him.

Oh Please! haven't you learned anything from this experience.

your feeling sorry for someone who might have slit your throat for ten bucks?

the world is not an "ideal" place, or a "utopia"
poor or "disadvantaged" people in this country are probably for the most part druggies.
most people you give a handout to aren't grateful, don't give a crap about you,
and feel they "deserve" more.

you may have just help promote this guy's drug or alcohol dependancy with your "goodhearted" deed.
think about that for a while before you offer up money to some vagrants again.
