after defragmenting system, doesn't shut down it hangs up

why does my computer hang up after defragmenting my harddrive everytime i shut down eveything in the system statup then defrag and still won't shut down i'm running windows ME edition but this was happening before this install ,also i use to have on the start up where it said
H-L start up and i don't see it anymore

did you "end task" your antivirus program? becuz if you do that, windows won't shut down and you gotta jus press the reset button. That's what happened to me, cuz i turn off my antivirus whenever itz defragging to prevent any errors...
