After clean install of Win98SE

essential

Senior member
Hello All,

About two weeks ago, my system crashed, had several problems I could not solve, so I formatted and reinstalled Windows98SE clean. Now, after installing, I got IE6 and all the updates. Now, when I go to websites, many simple javascripts won't work. For example, on jcrew.com or other similar sites, say you are looking at a shirt and click on a different color and normally the image you are looking at changes to the new color, that stuff doesn't work for me at all. Also, I cannot click on the "new topic" button in these forums, it?s like there is no link there. I am posting this from my fathers computer. I have installed the Java2 runtime environment, and also gone into advanced features to make sure everything is enabled. Anyone ever heard of this problem or have any ideas on how to solve it?

Thanks.

lets see, i have many solutions to this
even if pc speed is your bottleneck, move to Win2k, IMHO the entire 9x kernel was a pile of crap plastered on top of DOS
get firefox?

Java is not javascript. Installing a jre will make almost no difference in your web browsing.

Well, I never had a problem like this before I formatted, and I had the same OS. I can't really upgrade anything yet. And yes, Java is not javascript, my bad. I can't even hit reply on these boards, heh. Oh well, if anyone thinks of anything let me know. I will keep playing around myself and see if I stumble on anything.

Thanks.

I would switch to Windows 2000. I strongly agree with sheik124 that the entire Windows 9X kernel was a pile of crap. Why not just everyone run Windows 2K or XP by now if you have at least a decent PC? There would be less problems in the IT world. Windows 2K is just as fast as Windows 98 on a PC with at least 128MB of RAM and a Pentium II 400MHz CPU or better system. That is just what I've encountered from my experience.

There is a seperate Windows Scripting update, version 5.6 I think, possibly newer. Try installing that, either before or after the IE updates.

You may want to try the "UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 1.6.2 (Freeware)". If you go to the site, you can check out whay it does and what updates it has. I have put this in two computers and it worked fine. All the Win98SE updates in one download.

I'm posting this message on a Win 98SE, IE 6 system. The hard drive on this computer was formatted and Win 98SE installed in April. IE 6 was installed from a Money 2003 CD rather than by download. I don't know whether that is significant. But, I haven't encountered problems viewing any sites.

You might try the Repair procedure. Open Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs. Find IE and select Add/Remove. In the next panel, select the Repair option.
