After benchmarking do you back down to stock speeds???

Same here. I don't see the point of overclocking just for benchmarks - I play games, not benchmarks ;)

Does it really shorten the life of your card if we leave the speeds we are running it at? probably not too much right at least not before another upgrade. :)

Yes, overclocking does shorten the life of your card. However, it shouldn't be much of a difference if you do it carefully, since most people replace their cards in about 2 years anyway.

I voted for the first option but in practice I don't tend to overclock at all.

I wonder if overclocking on standard voltage (video card) while being watercooled with temps lower than air cooling would shorten its lifespan (7800GTX 520core 1414mem):)

I picked the second option. I'll run my card through a gamut of overclocking tests when I get a new one, to see how well it does. Then, I will back it down to a safe, but still higher than stock level. I do the same with CPUs. My Venice right now can do 2.6 pretty handily, but I prefer to run at 2.4 to keep heat and voltage down.

depends on my mood. Sometimes, i'll overclock it, sometimes i'll leave it at stock.

I leave the o/c but I tend to buy better cooling for whatever video card I plan on keeping long term. It's gotten to the point where I already have my NV silencer in hand and I'm waiting for my 7800GT to arrive!

Modern video cards all run too hot for my liking!

yup, if I later discover some anormalities, or instabilities I shave off a couple of Mhz.

ditto.
I OC find a good level which seems to be stable and leave it there. If I notice artifacts a few hours into gaming I'll turn down the OC a bit till I no longer see them.

Can't see the poll?
EDIT: nm. I picked the first option.. all the games I play I can run at highest settings anyways.

I usually back down to stock speeds for 24/7 use than I crank it back up when I want to game or bench. 2D doesn't seem to benefit much from ocing the stink out of the card ;).

I also use different 2d/3d clocks. I keep it at default clocks for 2d and then crank it up for gaming or benchmarking.

I adjust clocks based on need. Usually I test to some high level (435/1200 with my 6800GT) then back down to a reasonable level (400/1100). Then if I find a game that rapes my card I adjust upwards to help my get those few extra fps. So far this has not really happend, though I did adjust updwards with FEAR. I dropped back down after getting that second gig of ram as that really helped the 'smoothness' of the game.
