After an OS reinstall my games became EXTREMELY slow.

A while back now I decided to reinstall my OS at the time which was Windows 7. After I did this my computer got very weird and I suddenly started to get FPS drops in games I never had FPS issues in before. After this I somehow thought it was a hardware issue so I replaced everything in my hardware except my GPU.

First I replaced my Main HDD Drive for an SSD, that didn't help, then I changed my Secondary HDD for another HDD, that didn't help, so then I replaced everything except my GPU. I still had issues. Then I upgraded my Windows 7 to Windows 10 through the free upgrade which I found on HowToGeek(dot)com and today I finally replaced my GPU but still I have issues.

I would love it if someone knows how to help me, I have also stresstested my CPU,GPU and RAM, all tests were fine, no errors found.

Specs -
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
MB: ASUS Prime Z270-A, Socket 1151
CPU: Intel Core i7-6700k Skylake 4.0GHz
CPU: Cooler: Corsair Hydro Series H90
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3000MHz 16GB
GPU: ASUS Geforce GTX 1080 ROG Strix
PSU: Corsair CX750M, 750W
OS: Windows 10 Pro

Someone mentioned this in another thread, but Windows 7 (to some extent), and Windows 10 (to a huge extent), slow down your computing quite a bit upon initial install, mostly because of Windows Update, and housekeeping tasks (Search Indexing, updating Windows Store Apps, Defragmenting, etc.)

Best to set "High Performance" power plan (or disable sleep computer setting after 30 minutes), and then just let your PC run overnight for a few nights to a week, until Windows sorts itself out.

If it still does it, then it may be down to a driver or setting, or perhaps even some hardware is going bad.

Also, USB devices plugged in can cause various lag issues.

Define slow. Run something like fraps and tell us what numbers you are seeing.

Are you installing drivers from manufacturers' websites?

Slow like, whatever I'm playing and no matter what graphical settings I have it on I get FPS drops. Something can be happening in game or not, and I'll just get random drops. One time I was playing a game called Armello(turn based game) and everytime the turns would cycle I would get FPS drops(about every 5 minutes or so cause that's how long we normally used on our turns). Then I go to play GTA 5 and suddenly I get FPS drops every 5 minutes. It seemed like the drops had "transferred" to another game... I have no idea how but.. somehow...

I have had Win 10 for a while now and it doesn't update anymore.. well unless it gets a new update. I can try to leave it on High Performance for a week or so and see what happens, but I'm not sure it'll help :s

Again, numbers please. Had a guy one time going crazy because sometimes his framerate would dip below 100 fps (and honestly the number might have been even higher). Just need to know what we are working with.

I don't own fraps but I can tell you that when I'm running my screen on 144Hrz I get 144FPS and it'll drop to 80~FPS and then jump back up. And If i run my screen at 60Hrz It'll drop from 60 FPS to 30FPS. Some games I'm lucky in and it'll only drop 1 or 2 frames at checkpoints and such, but most of the time it's these extreme drops.

OK. It would probably be good to have the game windowed so you can you at CPU load, app load, and network load (when applicable) when the slowdowns occur.

Also, have you done a fresh install of Windows 10 yet? it honestly does seem to run better than the upgrade install.

Will report back with CPU load etc...
I have tried a fresh install on my main drive with Windows 10, but I haven't formated both my drives after acquiring Windows 10. Only my main, I kept my secondary cause I wanted to keep my game saves.

And I haven't seen anyone mention to check drivers? I understand that Windows might install drivers automatically, but it doesn't hurt to double check. Additionally, upon a fresh install, wait a little bit and remove bloatware, don't start downloading games and going into them, it takes some time for all of the drivers and bloatware to be downloaded. After that, proceed to remove unnecessary programs.

I tested with Task MAnager, I kept the game in windowed mode and held them next to each other while I played. I tested this on Metal Gear Solid 5, where I get FPS drops everytime I hit a checkpoint. The CPU went between 15%-25%, depending on what I did in-game, explosions etc. It never spiked when the FPS drops hit, it would gain 1% or 2% but it never exceeded 25% usage. RAM was stable at 33% and my DISK never went above 10%. I also used HWMonitor to check the GPU temp. It never went above 63degrees celsius.

I also tried another game called Armello, a simple turn based game where I get FPS drops everytime the turns cycle between players. There when I got FPs drops the FPS "spiked" from 9% to 15%, but it never went above 15% usage in the Task Manager. RAM and DISK didn't get close to MGS5 usage, and they never spiked. The GPU was at 35degrees celsius at all times.

I checked my MB drivers and they are all the newest version possible I suppose? They are all newer versions than what's on my MB's website, which is ASUS.

Good detective work. Has the game updated since you last installed it? I have a couple steam games that were facing slowness issues, only to find that a re-install of the latest version fixed the issue.

Also, if your issues are just with steam games, you may want to post in the steam community and see if there is anyone else facing issues with that one.

Well I recently installed The Escapists 2 which got released the 22nd of August, and I'm having the same issues there. My friends who I was playing with, didn't have these issues, so I don't think it's the games that are the issue.I have tried playing League of Legends and there I also have FPS issues but not the same issues. If I turn on VSYNC then LoL says it's playing at 60FPS but it feels like 30FPS, it's verry choppy. It'll only get smooth if I turn VSYNC off, but then when I get FPS drops I REALLY notice it.. The only other games I have are some on Origin and some on Blizzard, I can try to play them and see what happens.. I haven't had a chance to play those games. Yeah, I'll try to play other games on other clients and see what happens.
