After 7800, will there be a counter to the R520?

The one thing that seems to have made this release unique is that the 7800 remains unchecked by ati. I have yet to see anything solid from ati. At the same time Nvidia has been this card shipping since day one. (I assume they knew ati had nothing so they were able to pile up the chips) It now seems more likely that the 7800gt will appear long before the almighty R520. I am looking to build a new mega-system at Christmas and I am doubting we will see new cards in resonable quantities from ati this year so I will only have one choice really. The GTX is probably the baddest of the 7xxx except for pre-oced and 512 MB versions. But I think Nvidia will be hussling to get their next big thing out soon after ati, getting them one generation ahaed.

When the R520 does appear it will probably continue the upward spiraling of graphic cards prices. It will probably be a hair under the MSRP for the the current best Nvidia but street will be much more.

I just speculating.

A lot. ATi first has a history of not producing demand, 90nm will be worse. ATi cards also have a history of selling high on release. I'm not sure if that's vendor gouging of Ati "msrp" just being bunk. Either way nV is to be commended for actually selling at or below what they say and delivering thoughout gen 6 and 7.

I was never a Nvidia guy, and I also dont see how the 7800 is cpu limited at 1600x1200 4x8x. Sounds like you're hoping there's some hidden performance to unlock if you could only get a better cpu. Anyway, my speculation is that Nvidia took the opportunity to release a high end card sooner than Ati, even if it means having a 24 pipe card possibly having to compete with a 32 pipe card. But none of that really matters, because the real money is made in the midrange market.

Ati's strategy might be a more long-term one. Consider this: if Nvidia's midrange cards will have 16-20 pipes, then I would speculate Ati's midrange cards should have more, since they're based off a core with 32 pipes (supposedly). So, now imagine ALL of Ati's cards having more pipes than their NV competitors in about 3 months maybe, and Ati might be getting a lot more sales in the near future if Nvidia doesnt step up with a bigger and badder card.

since when was the 9800 pro meant to compete with the 6 series? Ati has the X800 line...

well releasing a 32pipe card is not exactly a refresh card although it may be in the same generation. depending on how ATI's card performs nvidia would counterattack. at the moment the pressure is on ATI not only to deliver a good performing card but to have cards in mass production.

I was never a Nvidia guy, the 5800U/5900U was a POS but it got rocked by the X8xx series ATi cards.

How can you compare the FX series to the X8 series. The X8 is an entire generation ahead.

Admittedly the 5800 and 5900 series (FX series in general) are not to good. But in actuality, they are excellent at DX8.1, and OpenGL. It just got slaughtered, over and over in DX9. However, they are definitely not POS... but the R3xx series was the better buy.

Hmmm you're just as bad as Rollo (or worse since you always complain about him). I read that quote as the 9800pro was nice but they (ATi) got rocked by the 6xxx series (compared to the x800). I think he was comparing the state of things in the two different generations. I could be wrong though - even so your response was quite unnecessary.

Let's see...in one thread we have people comparing the Ati's X800 to the Nvidia's 5900 and we also have people comparing the 6800 Ultra to the 9800pro. What's the point? The only thing I am interested in is Nvidia's fairly impressive 7XXX series launch versus Ati's possible vaporware.

As far as these yields I choose to believe it. 3% may very well have been true before optimization, they may now be getting 10% like the pervious Nvidia launch. And if it is anywhere as powerful as the Ati fanboys claim it would make them happy even if they only had enough to send review samples out and make a paperlaunch to cover their butts for another couple of months.

I assure you, they are getting much better than 10% yields. Had they been getting those yields, ATI would be bankrupt in no time.

Obviously he was being sarcastic, in response to someones idiotic post comparing the radeon 9xxx cards to the gf6 series. Anyway, if you're gonna do that, the 9800p is not much slower than a 6600gt, but compare a 5800/5900U to a x800 - total ownage.

WTH?

I was simply doing the exact opposite of the other guy.

He compared the 9xxx to the Nvidia 6 series.

When ATi destroys it with their multiple 32-pipe cards this July, nVidia will be forced to go out of business

Haha, seriously, what is up with you n00bs asking questions for which no one has definite answers.
It is assumed that after ATi releases their lineup, nVidia will throw out a 512 MB 7800 Ultra to compete with the X950XT PE, but no one knows anything for sure.

A) I'm no noob
B) Because I wanted info
C) In the end, does it really matter what I post?

You are a n00b if you think the 9800 was supposed to compete with 6xxx series of cards. It is as old as the 5 series and trounces it in pretty much everything. Yes I know the 6600 is better than the 9800, but look at the age, it took them long enough to catch up. And no I am not a fanboi, I have owned TNT2s, GF2s, and a GF4. Not to mention that NV makes the best socketA chipset hands down.

Yeah, that was a bad statement by me, oh well.
