After 7800, will there be a counter to the R520?

Basically the title and summary explain it all. Will there be a card after the 7800 that will be competitive with the R520?

I hope so because I just ordered one of these without knowing the R520's were coming out so soon. Getting the evga so I could do the trade up program as long as a new nvida card comes out within the next 3 months. :) If not this should be plenty good too.

no . . . the r520 will be so overwhelmingly fast that nVidia will give up and concentrate on MB sales.

:D

of course

and the 7800UltraOC and probably the 7850 and certainly the 7900 then the will be the '8' series . . .

7900? I think that can be a 32 pipline card, but if this is like 6X00 series, they won't release refresh cards...

well releasing a 32pipe card is not exactly a refresh card although it may be in the same generation. depending on how ATI's card performs nvidia would counterattack. at the moment the pressure is on ATI not only to deliver a good performing card but to have cards in mass production.

32 pipe R520? LOL.. What do you think the yield will be on those puppies? Not very high I can assure you. Guaranteed ATI is suffering because of the move to 90nm and current leakage that goes along with the 90nm process. Unless it's dealt with like others have (Intel & AMD) They will first of all, have a heat monster on their hands IF in fact they can get all 8 (yes thats eight) quads fully functioning on a core. There are probably going to be an overabundance of "X900pro's" if ya know what I mean.

If ATI can get a 32 pipe card rockin without too much heat, power draw and I think the most important part, availability, then I will give my dollars to them as well as Nvidia when the time comes. I need to have at least one card from each company from each gen. usually the 2nd card from the top.

Props to Nvidia on this release. They did us right this time.

If a 24 Pixel pipe 7800GTX is CPU limited, I can only imagine a 32 Pipe from ATi. Why would Ati want to forfit yeilds to pipes that are not needed?

I was never an ATI guy... the 9800pro was nice but they got rocked by the 6xxx series of geforce cards. I can't wait to see what's around the corner from Nvidia. $600 for the GTX is a pretty good price?

The 7800 GTX is all that nVidia could muster this round.

When ATi destroys it with their multiple 32-pipe cards this July, nVidia will be forced to go out of business

Haha, seriously, what is up with you n00bs asking questions for which no one has definite answers.
It is assumed that after ATi releases their lineup, nVidia will throw out a 512 MB 7800 Ultra to compete with the X950XT PE, but no one knows anything for sure.

The real challenge this round is to have them available....R520 can be a tad faster than G70 (as R420 line was with NV40), but it won't matter if one card is far more available (as NV40 was vs. R420 - that's why NV has most of the current gen market). Nvidia did a great job not just making an excellent chip, but also having it available to buy DAY ONE. They changed the game - before it was about "who's faster", now it's about "Can I buy it? Will I be able to buy it 6 months from now? Will it be at MSRP?"

I say Kudos to the green guys for a stellar job on the launch, and here's hoping ATi can follow suit

A) I'm no noob
B) Because I wanted info
C) In the end, does it really matter what I post?

I really can't see another major architecture improvement coming from Nvidia so soon after the release of the 7800GTX. If Nvidia does comes out with an Ultra version, the only options I see possible for it over the standard card would be 512mb memory, higher clocked core and faster memory.

And 90nm process.

True. That would help the 7800 line become even more economical while lowering power consumption and heat output.

Yah, hopefully they won't have current leakage problems as most manufacturers have had moving to the 90nm process. Lower cost, less heat, less power consumption are all plus's. plus's? ;)

You can get a 7800GTX for $515 quite regularly.:)

Well according to VERY NEW and possibly wrong rumours, the R520 will come out, be better than the G70. Then the G71 will come out to compete with ATi's R580. Finally ATi's R600 will compete with Nvidia's G80. I remind you, don't flame me, these are just googled links :p:p

ATi

R520
R600

Nvidia

G71
G80
