After 10 years I finally decided to re-visit the dr.

Just over 10 years ago I visited an orthopedic surgeon about my knee. Back then I was told I had issues with my knee and was given three options. These options were:

1. Live with the pain and hope I outgrow them.
2. Be placed in a cast for an extended period of time and hope that helps.
3. Have surgery and recover.

At the time #2 and #3 were out of the question for me as I was working towards soccer scholarships at several division 1 schools. However, 10 years later I have yet to outgrow the issues.

Two weeks ago I twisted/cracked my knee and the pain has been unreal. I had an MRI done last week and the results are in. Unfortunately, they won't tell me the results without consulting an orthopedic surgeon. Now I have an appointment with the orthopedist and I fear surgery is the only answer.

I don't want to have surgery as I don't have time in my life to deal with it. I hope for the best, but won't know until next week. For now, I deal with the pain on a daily basis. 🙁

good luck on the knee

Few people ever have the time to put their life on hold for surgery. Better to get the surgery and not have to worry about things deteriorating later on.

I know, but with my current job I don't have the time to take time off. Might explain why I have near 4 weeks of vacation saved up.

How many years would you like to deal with this unreal pain without surgery?
I worry that the surgery won't really do anything for me. The suggested surgery only sounds like a temporary fix.

Obviously you have a lot of time to spend on this site judging by your number of posts. Is that why you don't have time to get yourself treated to get better?

Back in the day that was true. Of course I was posting from work at the time, so my initial statement holds true. I may be posting now, but I am working from home at the same time.

If you're fine with the pain that's cool. I would wait and see what the orthopedist has to say though. Things have come a long way concerning knee surgery in the last ten years.

I know and I've looked into it. I know they want to scrape away the cartilage, but I just worry where that will actually take me. I'm no doctor so I'll see what he/she has to say.

Sounds like a second opinion is in order.

uk, knee surgery is not fun how old are you? Is this just going to be a temporary fix until they have to do a knee replacement?

Get a couple second opinions find out what your options are. If surgery is a must do it while you are younger. Healing works a lot slower when you are older.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I'm 26. I knew this was a problem years ago, but thought I'd outgrow it. I'm meeting with a different doctor for a third opinion next week.

better to get the surgery now, i had a cyst (just for reference), i had 2 options, wait for it to go or surgery, i waited and after 5 months it came back hard, really really hard, i had surgery 2 weeks ago after I came back home, now recovering.

What caused your previous problem with the knee?

I always had bad legs. I was born with my pigeon feet. So that doesn't help that day-to-day uneven wear and tare of the joints.

My knees aren't in bad shape as I'm still active and run a lot though I imagine when I hit 35 years-old I'm going to be in pain.

Based on the highlighted detail you should go get the surgery done asap (pending the doc's advice of course) because the older you get the longer it will take to heal.

I had the same situation with my knee. I decided to go into a dedicated long term vision of strength training to bolster the muscles around my knee. It's something that I continue to do to this day, and its been about ten years (I'm 43). I have been pain free for the most part, and I'm a runner to boot. My advice would be to look into strength training. Making the muscles stronger around the knee takes stress off the bones/ligaments. I am proof anyway. Good luck.

Your health > *

Yeah. If you die you won't get much work done. I can prove this. With science.

Don't be sad about it be happy! Your knee problem is going to be fixed and you can quit worry about it. I think it's something to look forward to.

Shoot...my wifes grandma had her knee replaced and was up and walking on it within a week.

Good luck with the surgery and here's  to a quick recovery. 🙂
