Try this laptop overclocking guide:
http://www.laptoplogic.com/resources/guides/11/1/1/
It was written using a Compaq V2000, IIRC has same chipset as your R50e

And yes, your FSB will stay @ 100MHz (400MHz effective) no matter what; the CPU clock varies by changing the multiplier and voltage to save battery life. Personally I just leave it on "Slow" (600MHz locked) on batt and "Adaptive" on AC to prevent too much heat dissipation.

To be honest I love the performance on my Thinkpad R50e and I don't feel the need for an OC at all in this laptop configuration that I have, especially hat the tasks that I run on it rarely require high performance, I don't see benefits coming out of it, but I am only trying to get my DDR 400 memory running at it's usual speed rather than 333 so If I can bump the fsb a little and drop my clock speed to a low level that would be great, I ll check out that guide and see what results I come up with. ;)

Yep for me that is the most effecient setting, most of the time I see my clock @ 600mhz I rarely see it go up, and when it does it's usualy a 400mhz increase and then back to the old 600mhz i love the effeciency that Intel speed-step works at, I mean imagine if it wasn't for that it will be a constant 1.6 ghz that would have been an aweful waste of battery lifetime and an excessive heat output, I heared here on Anandtech that the newer pentium Mobile are going to have the GPU and Voltage regulator integrated on the CPU + the memory controller inorder to allow an even smoother down shift in clockspeed I can't wait to see those in action.

I know Merom is going to have that, but I'm not sure if Yonah will. Yonah will be the dual core Pentium M coming out in February; Merom will be 64-bit dual core sometime later in 2006.
Both will run on a 667MHz FSB, DDR2 667, 4GB RAM, and 65nm

Looks hot :D

I tried turning off my speed-step through BIOS and still my clock speed is still fluctuating according to load why is it still working ? I mean it's OS independent right ? What am I missing here?

sorry for the bump but i haven't been at this site in awhile. ;)

i just called lenevo to check on my status and they said that it was being assempled as i spoke (friday). hopefully, it should be here this week.

i have a few question for you linuxator.

1. how is the heat on the thing? i mean, does it get warm? fan noise?
2. does it show any signs of flexing?
3. how is the built in wireless? (if you used it)
4. did it take long for it to boot (before you added the hdd)

thanks

Dunno why it didn't work if you turned it off in the BIOS, but there does have to be OS support. Win2K requires a driver, XP has it built in.

I didnt think anyone is still replying to this, sorry about the wait, let me answer the questions for you :

1 - The thing is cold as ICE I never feel it being hot on the bottom I barley feel hot air coming out of the heatsink exhaust on the side even when it's runing at 1.6ghz

2 - What do you mean by flexing, do you want to know how rigid it is ? It's not made out of steel, but that ABS plastic is worth the $ 450 that you would have to pay to buy a T series of the same specs, but the plastic is more rigid than any regulaer non IBM laptop I have seen on the market.

3 - the built in Wi-Fi is sweet , and you get to control it from the Keyboard ( switch on / off ) by pressing Fn + F5 it's that simple.

4- Not at all.

I am so glad that fbrdphreak changed my mind when I was going to get the Celeron model for $ 200 less.

Can you get one with a great than 1024x768 display? That would be the only thing holding me back besides the touchpad. I like the touchpad on my R51 and the 1400x1050 display.

"Ouch. I would buy one today if there was a VGA output."

Of course there is a VGA output on the right side !!!

Did you mean video output ?

I mean come on man @ $ 849 don't demand the impossible the specs are in my sig (except that I upgraded the HDD, and memory) It's impossibe to get any better deal .
Not even Dell could have matched this deal buddy
I remember a month and a half ago I saw the deal on the IBM / Lenovo site : 2 brand new Thinkpads one for $ 599 and another for $ 849 I thought I was dreaming I knew at that moment I am laying my hand on one and ended up with the pentium M 1.6 ghz (Dothan) model, I am running Fedora Core 4 on it everything works like a charm even the Wifi cheers

can you change the resolution in the display settings properties or is it permantly stuck at 1024x768? i don't mind 1024x768 resolution as i use it on my 17in. sony flat panel monitor and it doesn't bug me but maybe a larger resolution would look better on that screen.

i know my thinkpad supports vertical stretch controls as it says in my BIOS settings but I need to look it up, into how these configurations work, perhaps you would be able to compress your screen so that it looks like it's a wide screen, I don't know maybe somone will enilghten us about that issue.

OK news I disabled the horizental / vertical stretch in BIOS and ended up with a minature screen in the middle of the lcd, but looked very nice in quality of course it's because it's one tenth the size of the original screen, so I went again in BIOS and renabled vertical / horizntal stretch. so that's it the resloution is final. 1024 x 768

Hi guys, i just got an r50e, which came with the default winxp home. I heard from a friend that thinkpad's bios resides in a hidden partition in its harddisk, so if i format it (so i can install winxp pro), i will need to do something about that. ibm confirms this and says i'll need to bring my laptop down to the service center for them to do the installation for me (at a cost, of course, which is stupid). does anyone has any experience in this? any help is much appreciated!

Rgds, Mike
