Below I am going to be pointing out main things that come to mind about this thinkpad, feel free to ask about anything you want to know about.

After 3 weeks of waiting , and after dealing with a week of customs BS , I have finally received my long awaited R50e Thinkpad.

For all of you that had questions about this Thinkpad, now I am ready to answer all speculations.

1-You dont get a touchp ad , no problem for me I like my trackpoint.

2-You don't get video out, doesn't really matter.

3-You don't get recovery discs you have to make them yourself, fine with me too.

4- You get 4 hours of battery life max , on normal usage.

5- For all those who critisized the R50e for being thick, I didn't find any noteable dfifference between it and the T series except for the touchpad and video out port and some minor fancy features. It's true T series are made out of composite material, but I don't find the R50e of low quality in anyway.

6- It's not heavy at all compared to any notebook of it's class.

7- Is it worth the price ? Damn right it is. @ $ 849 I don't think there is any laptop on the market that can even compare to it quality wise.

8- You get no floppy, BTW do those things even exist anymore ?

9- No ps/2 ports only 2 USB 2.0 ports on the left side, fine with me too.

10- Don't see any where on the bottom for a port replicator, so don't expect getting a port replicator for it.

11- The machine is slow by no means ( 1.6 ghz Dothan Pentium M 2 MB L2 cache with Intel Speed-Step), and the stock 768 MB ram should be enough for almost anyone. Though I have removed stock DDR333 memory( 512 MB infineon + 256 MB samsung) with 2 * 512 MB DDR400 CL 2.5 corsair value select.

12- The trackpoint experience is great, and for your pleasure IBM provides two more different trackpoint caps selections for you to experiment with.

13- IGP is an Intel extreme graphics 2 with 64 MB shared memory, haven't got to testing that out since I got this laptop for writing documents and programming here and there.

14- You get a nice Cd-RW/ DVD rom combo, whihc is very nice, and speed can be controlled via BIOS ( Silent , Normal, High)

15- The security utilities that ocme with this Thinkpad are out of this world, you get an embedded chipset that asks you for a pass phrase, this sofyware loads before the login screen, and encrypts your passphrase on the onboard, security chipset. Also allows you to creat a 2gb max encrypted part of you HDD / user that prevents anyone from viewing your info even when hdd is placed in another laprop.

16- The 15" LCD is awesome with all controls at your fingertips.

17- Special keyboard functions are great, you can hibrenate, eject cd, control brightness turn off LCD turn on Thinklight( which is a nice feature for dark rooms so you can type easily) , all of those can be done in a matter of two clicks.

18- The sound card is good, but the speaker is horrible , you get a one channel speaker that is so weak sometimes you have to stick your ears next to it to hear it, that 1 watt speaker is the only thing that I couldn't understand in my R50e, why provide such a weak speaker ? but once connected to some speakers through the headphone port you can hear the nice quality that the soundcard has to offer.

Any more questions post here.

1. ouch.. I love my touchpad
2. not a big deal if you don't have a display or if you have a port rep
3. pfft! who needs 'em?
4. 4-hours = goood - I've got the larger capacity bat for my T42 and can usually get 5.5 out of it
5. a side-by-side comparison would have you saying otherwise. and the composite material the Ts are made w/ is just sweetness!
6. whether it's an R or a T, the weight of Thinkpads is right-on
7. worth every penny..

congrats, btw

So far I have removed the stock 4200 rpm 40 GB harddrive ( travelstar) and replaced it with a Toshiba 5400rpm 16 mb cache 40Gb hdd.
I have also received today 1 Gb of corsair DDR 400 ( 2 x 512 MB) which will be replacing the 768 mb of ddr 333 that comes with the thinkpad, but to my surprise there is only one slot on the bottom, is the other slot must be under the keyboard , I am pissed about that because I don't like how unpracticall that is , this is my first thinkpad so I would appreciate if any body gives me a hint on the steps that should be taking for replacing the second memory stick ( Like which screws should be removed and what to watch out for), a link to pic guide would be nice.

Now I am off to formatting my toshiba hdd, installing winxp pro then sp1 then Installing FC4 an hopefully the intel wifi chipset will get installed automatically since it has native linux support.

BTW that default WinXp home copy that comes with it , starts giving you problems riht away, for examplr the first time I booted it I got a error, oh you guessed it Netwrok connection problems, I didn't even bother with it I hat fckn SP2 gave me a headache a longtime ago.

PS: In a previous thread one member told me that I might not get the trackpoints caps collection, but actually they send you 2 extra of different type in addition to the one you have already.

Not sure about your R but my T has screws on the underside that have a "3" w/ an icon of a keyboard next to them. Unscrew these and you'll be able to remove the keyboard.. the other RAM module/slot will be visible at that point. To insert the module you push it in at a 45 degree angle and then push downward till the snaps on either side click in place.

The hardware maintenance manual for the R50e is here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-54932

BTW, you wasted your money on that DDR400. The most your chipset will support is DDR333, possibly only DDR266. If you run CPU-Z, it will tell you what chipset you have. The 855PM (discrete graphics) & 855GME (integrated graphics) supports DDR333, but the more common 855GM (integrated graphics) only supports DDR266. You should take advantage of the Best Buy deal and go get some DDR333 for free:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=40&threadid=1674407&enterthread=y

Anyway, once you take those screws out just follow the instruction for popping out the keyboard (its easier for you to read it than for me to describe it). Once you do it once, taking the keyboard off is easy.

BTW, regarding XP Pro: have you not heard of slipstreaming? Don't bother with installing the OS and then updating, just slipstream SP2 onto your CD image and re-burn it. It will install with SP2 ready to go :)

Flip it over carefully w/ your hand supporting the keyboard. It should just drop out.

"BTW, you wasted your money on that DDR400"

the IBM specs say that my FSB is 400, are you sure about your info check the website.

Oh I have slipstreamed Xp before , I don't like Sp2 as I have stated above I have a lipstreamed Winxp pro and that works great for me.

I ll read the guide maybe I ll realize what I am missing.

Thanx for the guide I have upgraded the memory in their so easily, the only thing I didn't know about is that you have to push the keyboard back so it is released (had a little issue with that flat cable in my way but got around it), I wish I have realized the deal about the kingston memory before , but I have already got the memory and it's going to be a hassle to send it back and pay Shipping + restocking, also is the BB memory CL 2.5, I ll guess I have time to give it a thought , but to be honest that is one hell of a deal, most probably I will go get some. thanx all for the help, I really appreciate it.

One question Linuxator. Can you call up microsoft and ask them if they can refund the Microsoft WIndows XP version since you will be using Linux on the computer instead? I want to see if it will work.

LOL man I wish that can be just a little possible to do, I rember before ordering it I was bored and had some time on my hand so I picked up my phone and called IBM and asked to talk to an IBM rep, I told him that I don't need WINBLOWS, and that I already have a harddrive so what about giving me a $ 50 discount for not getting the HDD, and a $ 100 discount for not getting WINBLOWS, and he was like WTF ? I kept going on for like 30 minutes untill i had something better to do I hanged up on him.

Oh, I'm not saying the FSB is not 400MHz. But that doesn't matter if the chipset doesn't support it.
Check your chipset with CPU-Z and compare it here:
http://www.intel.com/design/chipsets/mobile/855_fam.htm

Maximum of DDR333 support; meaning your RAM will only run @ DDR333 unless you OC the FSB, which I think you can only do on the GM/GME chipsets; not PM.

Then get to OCing! ;) Let's just hope that chipset supports DDR333, but unless its GME you're SOL :(

Anyway, the FSB:DRAM ratio is 3:5. So basically multiple about 1.66 times your FSB (internal clock, 100MHz stock) and you'll get your new DRAM clock.
100Mhz*1.66=166MHz (give or take, clock generators aren't 100% accurate :p)

So if you can get your clock up to about 125MHz (~500MHz FSB), you'll have a DRAM clock of ~400MHz. Perfect for your RAM :)

BTW, the free RAM @ BBY IS CL 2.5; I just checked it ;)

I think he must be talking about using a software like Clock-gen, if I am not wrong no where in a modern laptop
such as my thinkpad you are given BIOS settings for clocks/ multipliers.

I ran CPUz it tells me that my FSB is 100 mhz, and my BUS is 400 mhz these do stay the same no matter what my load is the only things that are changing are the multipliers and V-CPU

wow I tried both version of clockgen for Pentium M s and both of them froze my system causing me to manually restart, well too much for OC my thinkpad, then.lol
