African Immigrants fair better economically than African Americans

Linkage

interesting read.

The study, done at the State University of New York at Albany, finds that the median household income for immigrants from Africa and the West Indies in 2000 was about $7,000 higher than that of African-Americans, whose median household income is $33,500 - one of the lowest of any ethnic group in the United States.

The unemployment rate for whites in 2000 was 3.9 percent. For Asians, it was 4.7 percent, and 5.1 percent for Africans

There is no place for the hyphen in our citizenship... We are a nation, not a hodge-podge of foreign nationalities. We are a people, and not a polyglot boarding house.

I agree.

Opponents of affirmative action programs may see the study as proof that racial bias does not hold back all blacks.

But the author of the study, SUNY-Albany sociologist John Logan, said the income and employment gaps may say more about the high motivation level of immigrants, who tend to work longer hours, pool their resources, and save for the future.

No sh!t, you think?

I'm not even old enough to drink yet but my roommate & I make nearly twice as much as the median incomes listed in that article.

People who work hard (and smart) do well, it's fairly simple - And it has nothing to do with color of skin.

I didn't read the article, but I bet I could explain it.

Immigrants are almost always hard working people. The lazy people never take the effort to leave in the first place. Immigrants from Africa also tend to be highly educated (Africa has a major brain drain problem). The more educated you are the more you see that high paying jobs are available in countries with a higher quality of life. Put the two together and you get a lot of highly educated hard working people who are African immigrants. Of course they are earning a lot and doing well economically.

African Americans have the whole range of normal people: some hard working, some lazy - some educated, some not. Thus they should on average be worse off economically than immigrants.
