A draft Afghan constitution has been unveiled, setting out a new political system and defining Islam's role in the country.

It calls for the creation of an Islamic republic, with a presidential system, and where citizens have equal rights.

The draft will be debated by a loya jirga grand assembly next month, paving the way for possible elections in 2004.

A spokesman for President Hamid Karzai said Afghanistan needed stability and the new constitution was made with "the next 100, 200 years" in mind.

Islamic Republic where citizens have equal rights.
What if they are not Moslems? Do they have equal rights too?

"The draft is based on Islamic principles and recognises that no law can be contrary to the sacred religion of Islam," the commission said in a statement.

Seems benign, but once people start interpretting the Quaran their own way there will be conflict once again.

historically islamic countries and empires have a far better record in their relationships with christians, jews, etc.
even in india where muslim rulers were confronted with what must have appeared to them as the most ungodly
and bizarre polytheism on earth, they still managed to live in peace until the reign of aurangzeb when the amity
collapsed. afghanistan itself has shown great tolerance towards various faiths through the centuries. the taliban
were an aberation spawned in part by the soviet invasion and the internal implosion of their soceity.

Actually the Taliban got snubbed because the particular brand of Islam was not recognized as the official religion.

Other religions will be allowed, however the government will follow islamic guidelines. All people (which would include women) are given equal protection.

Seems about the best compromise with their culture and democracy.

It's a country where 99.9 percent of the people are Muslim and live lives rooted in the past. What were you expecting?

Thank God Bush won't let this happen in Iraq! :)

If Israel were in danger from SH, what kind of danger will they face from an Iraq where the Shiites rule? This is one of several reasons why invading Iraq was a bad idea. The region will be more unstable, not less after the U.S. turns over operations to the Iraqi Army and whatever puppet government we will have installed. It is truly scary how little Bush understands about how the world works. Everything is North Dallas Forty to him..... :(

Some of you are dreaming. They have no intention of leaving Iraq, ever. Given the perceived political unreliability of Saudi Arabia, I think there is serious planning afoot to make Iraq our central toehold in the middle east for the foreseeable future. The continued resistance and killings there are making that a tough sell, but hey, we elected a guy with less votes than the guy who "lost", who can't pronounce "nuclear", so I guess anything's possible.
