Finally dawned on me that my cable (COMCAST) bill is too high for my wallet.

I currently rent two HD DVRs from Comcast. Most of the time we watch HD shows.

Can someone tell me which satellite provider has deals that include two HD DVRs in the package with no additional charge for the receivers ?

Thanks.

Try calling up DirecTV. I just recently upgraded to two HR20 HD DVRs for free. I'm not sure what they would offer a new customer but they seem to be offering deals now so it may be worth a shot. Be sure to mention competitor's offers, be polite, and take a look at this thread from DBSTalk.com.

Supposedly, DirecTV is going to be able to offer up to 100 HD channels by the end of the year.

Anybody have any info on this and if Dish will be competitive with this?

I'm in the same boat, too much $$ for Time Warner. $125 / mo and only $40 of that is internet. This is just for two TV's. $85/mo... wtf. Don't really know why I pay this much.

If somebody had all HD programming, it might be worth it. I think there was a satellite (voom or something) that had this, but they went under.

Show me the deals :D

I just moved from comcast with the same setup, 2 hddvrs

I chose DirecTV and it cost me $200 for the HDDVR and I got a regular SD box for free. The agent told me to wait a month and I could upgrade the SD box to a HDDVR for free.

I really don't want to pay $200 for the box ... I like the idea of leasing equipment especially when the technology gets outdated very rapidly.

the HR20 is mpeg4 and will be the standard for years to come.

Not to mention that the SD channels look as good as the HD channels on Comcast.

All reg SD channels, 480P. So glad I finally switched.

And just like you my bill with Comcast was close to $200 before I decided to switch. My DirecTV bill is $75 a month and then I pay $60 a month for Comcast internet. Thats until I find another solution that does not require me to get a phone line.

As I said above, call DirecTV and work a deal. If you get the right CSR, you should be able to get a receiver for free. Anytime you upgrade to a replacement receiver, you should get that for free as well. It may take a couple of tries to get the right CSR though.

Very topical discussion, as my roommate and I are looking to get out of a $130/month Comcast bill and into $100-$120/month bill for combined satellite/DSL service. Ideally service would include expanded 'variety' channels, an HD tier, local sports, and local networks in HD. We're also looking to do a two-room system with HD DVRs. But we haven't found anything that lets you rent the receivers (Dish only lets you rent non-DVR HD receivers?)

Even when you pay the $200-$400 upfront fee for the HD DVRs with DISH/DirecTV they still consider you to be 'leasing' the receivers. Its one of the great BS moves and why I don't upgrade unless I can get them for free.
