Just got Adelphia cable modem. We've got a variety of spare computers, network cards, and operating systems. We used to have DSL connected to Win98 using ICS and a router to route to 3 other computers. I tried deleting all of the DSL info (IP addresses, gateways, etc) from this server and hooking up the cable modem, but the server wouldn't connect to the internet. Adelphia support gave me some line about the driver not being adequate. There is also a yellow ! over ICS in Device Manager. But the thing worked fine with the DSL. Right now I've got the modem running just to my computer running w2k.
So here's what we have:
-Motorola SB4100 cable modem
-3 computers need connected
-2 extra computers that could be used for servers
-3 or 4 extra NIC's laying around
-Router
-copies of Win98 SE, Win2k Pro
-tons of cabling.
Basically, I don't want to buy a linksys. I just want to run 1 computer as a server and connect the other 3 computers to that one via the router. What's the best way to go about this?
