I am looking into buying a new system and was told that the T-Bred 1700 are very overclockable.

Well, I looked at excaliberpc.com's website and found 2 versions of the "B" T-Breds:

(I also found out from this meesage board that the AXDA1700DLT3C overclocks better than the AXDA1700DUT3C.)

JIUHB:0310WPMW
JIUHB:0310XPMW

What are the differences between the 2 and most important of all, which one is better to overclock. It would be great to just spend $72 and get at least 2.1 - 2.2 Ghz. Also I would like to get advise on which motherboard (if you give me the model number - that'd be great). I was looking at the Soltek, ABIT, and MSI motherboards with the nForce2 chipset.

And what kind of RAM should I use? Is PC3500 sufficient or should I spent a few more bucks and go for PC3700?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

the WMPW's run hot......but they can go at high speeds at low voltages(mine's at 1.75v and 2.33GHz)

Stay away from MSI if you're serious about overclocking (200mhz limit). For moderate OC, though, it's ok. You can get the delta version which can go upto 230 but it still has too few choices for voltage changes.

I got the 0310WPMW "Retail" from PCsupply source. $69 dollars shipped. While they don't guarantee stepping, they do guarantee a T'bred B. I'm not alone in getting this stepping from them. Several other people have reported gettings 0310WPMW's as well. It's still a gamble, but the chances are good.

Got a 0310wpmw and a NF7-S rev 2.0 from excaliber a couple of weeks ago. Running 2.2 ghz (200 x 11.0) with 53C prime95. My ram is GEIL PC3500. I need to burn in more and also replace my crappy volcano 7+ heatsink to get more speed out of this chip. My suggestion..I've heard good things about both cores...get the ABIT NF7-S..and get at least good quality pc3200 ram (Corsair XMS). Happy overclocking!

i've tested

4 wpmw and 1 xpmw

i am currently running the "x" in my system

all of them have done 2.4 ghz on water (but capable on air as well)

x's don't seem to run as hot as the w's so if you're worried about temps, go with the x

people say you can request steppings so you might try ordering from pcsupplysource.com instead of excaliberpc.com, it's 3 dollars cheaper AND retail...

board: i'd recommend the 8rda+ or 8rda3+ if you can wait for it.... unless you want sata raid and sorts of bells and whistles, the nf7-s is not for you

ram: i highly recommend you get the twinmos memory from memoryx.com ... the ones with the bh-5 chips have been known to do up to 238 mhz @ 2-3-3-7 @ 2.9 volts which is pretty incredible for pc3200 ram...
