Ok, my fiance' told me that she would get me a digital camera for Christmas. I don't know much about them so any help would be appreciated. The money limit is $400, but I'd actually like to spend less than that, maybe $300. Let me know what the best value is for this price range...

I researched cameras extensively before buying one and can tell you that any choice will be a compromise of having the most wanted features against the lack of accessories. You are better off spending more on a well equiped camera rather than buying a cheaper one then buying all kinds of accessories and options to go with it. A camera with batteries that have to be recharged inside the camera is perhaps one of the first points to examine. Unless you have extra batteries and a charger, your camera is useless while recharging. A larger memory card is more desirable than bigger mega pixel numbers. Research and ye shall find.....

Buy a Olympus 460Z from buy.com using the $30 off $150 at dealcatcher.com

Should come out to around $320, you can get it for around $300 in other online stores...but they don't ship.

Then buy some rechargable batteries from thomasdistributing.com and you are set.
