Advice on Project Management Software

Hey AnandTech users,

Long time forum fan, first time poster.

I have a question as to which project management software is the best to use for my purposes. I'm managing a team of 12 people over the course of a year in a school organization. I need to find a program that will allow me to best coordinate projects over the course of the school year.

Right now I've just started using Microsoft Project, but I'm not sure if this is the right program to use, or if there's anything better out there. What I bascially need is a program that allows me to list goals we have for the next year, and efficiently tag projects and tasks underneath these goals. What I need in the software is:

  • - Project management in this format:

    - Work on levels of specificity
    - Top level is the category of the project
    - Next level is the goal (vague and broad master goal for the whole year)
    - Next level is the task or action to be taken
    - Some tasks will require further sublevels, so an option must be available to add these on
    - Lastly, the task or group of tasks must be assigned to a person or group of people

    - All of this needs to be seamlessly integrated into a 2003 - 2004 calendar

The problem with MS Project is that it is oriented towards individual projects. In a sense, I'm looking for a "company management" or "team management" program. Have any ideas or suggestions for me?

Thanks a lot.

I don't know why you say that. My company uses a combination of MS Portal Server and MS Project Server for team project management.

Thanks for the replies thus far.

The problem with MS Project is that we don't run on individual projects. Rather, we form master plans for the entire year during the summer. We brainstorm hundreds of ideas, and we have vague ideas of what we want to accomplish and several specific actions that we need to take during the course of the year.

What we need is a system to implement all of this in. Using MS project, we would have to have different project files for every task we complete. What I need is a system where I can input ideas and specify them all the way down to specific tasks.

Thanks again for the response, it's much appreciated.

Hi again,

I mentioned 'Free example' above but actually meant 'Free Product', by the sound of what you want it would be sufficient.

Actually, I've done some research into Microsoft Project, and it turns out this is exactly what I'm looking for! It was right under my nose the whole time!

Thanks a lot for your help guys, much appreciated.
