XP is also almost EOL and should only be considered as a last resort.

I understand win xp will be alive until 2014. That's 3 solid good years to go with the old laptop.

After that, we can try Windows 8 or Google Chromium...

It should not be slow. Just reformat the hard disk and reinstall win XP. Use MS-Office 2003 and a light-weight antivirus. You'll be fine with your system.

I agree. First run CHKDSK and see if it is just slow due to a file system being corrupted. Wouldn't hurt to run Malwarebytes, Spybot and Super-AntiSpyware.

That's just extended security support, MS hasn't been developing anything with XP in mind for years, IE9 already doesn't work on XP, and 3rd parties are finally starting to do the same. Using XP today is already an uphill battle and it's only going to get worse...

That's a good thing. Most everything MS has done to update XP has just slowed it down.

Yea, security's for n00bs. I like my O/Ss lean and exposed. I didn't need to worry about it on DOS, and I sure as hell don't need to worry about it now.

It's a good thing in that it'll force people to upgrade if they want to run newer software, but it's a bad thing in that a lot of people will ignore the fact that the OS is abandoned and want to run it for another decade.
