Hi all, I am headed to NYC in the middle of July, this will be my first time there and I am going alone so I'm feeling pretty lost. Can anyone in NYC or has been to NYC recommend a reasonably priced hotel? My budget for a room will be about 120-140USD. Will be meeting a friend there and staying for at least 6-7 days, so the room will have to be for 2 people. Any recommendations?

Will be probably eating out most of the time, how is the cost of dining out there? Nothing fancy, just normal dinner stuff.

Last of all, where would you suggest I go for a semi-romantic spot?

Thanks in advance!

My advise - don't go. I lived in NYC for 25 years. It is a noisy, filthy, aggressive, hostile, overcrowded seething cesspool of humanity. Nothing romantic about it. Now-a-days I avoid it at all costs, even though my family lives there. My last experience was getting stuck in gridlock in downtown at one intersection for one and a half hours on the day of my wedding (on my way to it) and having a biker throw a half eaten big mac on my windshield - at which point I just wanted to nuke the whole city.

I'm a NY'er born and bred, and The Big Apple is great! Can't tell you too much about hotels. NYC has 5 boroughs, but I assume you're talking about Manhattan. You're going to have to google for hotels in that price range. You need to decide whether you want to stay on the East Side or West Side, midtown (most expensive) or lower like Chelsea. Be aware that hotels in NYC are taxed to death.

Don't take the subways - you're going to have to use taxies. Eating out is no problem. You can find whatever you want in your price range. BTW, NYC has the greatest pizza in the world! Just look for a small pizzaria that's crowded.

lol NC is awesome! Got beaches, rolling hills, AND mountains!

Nah but NYC is great for a week (could NOT live therre! too busy!) I used a MetroCard to ride the subways everywhere...best deal IMO. Hotels aren't cheap. Try hotels.com or expedia.com first to search for one.

You won't run out of things to see in a week. Just search google for "things to do in new york" and you'll be overwhelmed. Enjoy!

don't be a hater. i was born in nyc, grew up in florida, and moved back to nyc because i hated florida. however, i wouldn't go around saying "no, don't live in florida because it's an old place with lots of slow drivers yadda yadda"

things have changed a lot in new york. you also should know that it's not advisable to drive and that public transportation is the way to go.

there are some youth hostels in nyc, specifically one on amsterdam avenue and west 103rd street. i know a lot of young people that stay there when they visit nyc.

I concur. Lived there my whole life, nyc is a sh*thole. Its alright to visit, but its just another city like the rest. At least make sure to see times square at night, but for the love of god, dont eat there, unless youre alright with paying 15 dollar for a hamburger at applebees.

Only places i've seen people stay in that price range have had to share bathrooms and stuff like that... eek...

As for semi-romantic... umm... Tavern on the green maybe?

Thios guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Go on expedia, find places in your price range and we'll let you know if that's a good location and such. NYC is amazing.

Also, take the subways. They are the best and not expensive. Cabs are rediculous. Subways can get you everywhere you need. And also, walk alot. It's the summer, it will be hot, but it's nice to walk.

Also, of course you will need to share a bathroom. Who has ever been to a hotel room w. twin beds w. more than 1 bathroom thaty wasn't some fancy suite?

I think you're confused... share as in share it with other people on that floor.

And, yes stay the hell away from cabs, they are a complete rip-off.

You and I know the subways, but the OP'er is from Singapore. Subways are ok during the day but, even then, picture rush hour as his first experience. I definitely wouldn't suggest them to a foreign tourist to use at night. Probably using them during the day during non-rush hours are best.

He doesn't have much of a choice since he can't afford cabs.

Don't eat anywhere near times square...its expensive and generally really crappy food. you're in nyc, explore the different types of cuisine we have here...
