Advice on moving out...if you could do it again what mistakes would you avoid?

It looks like I'll finally be moving out of the house during 3rd year of university. My girlfriend will be heading to university too, and we'll both need to stay in town to go to our respective universities. Her parents just informed her they're moving to the suburb of suburbs here in Toronto...and that'll make it a 2 hour commute (in rush hour) one way to the university she wants to go to. Not to mention the need for a car up in that area (Richmond Hill), things will just be more inconvenient and expensive if she tries to make things work.

As far as moving out goes (and not the decision to move out with my girlfriend...we're like best friends and have been going out steady since our first date almost 3 years ago..so I think it's a safe decision). What do I need to know about? Apartments (unfurnished) in Toronto run about $1000 a month for a baseline one. What other costs should I factor in? We won't have a car but the transit system in Toronto is really good so until I get a car, we probably will be taking the bus or subway everywhere...or if we get a good apartment downtown then just walking everywhere.

I'm a totally clueless suburbanite. I'll have a summer job lasting 4 months making between $15-$20 an hour full time, but I probably won't have any income in the winter months. Ditto for the girlfriend but her summer job probably won't last as long nor pay as much. If necessary we'll get a no-brainer part time job during school...but we'd both like to focus on our studies.

I'm being pretty general...so let me ask you guys some questions:

1) What costs do I have to consider (i.e. rent, food, clothes, etc).
2) Do you think I'm cutting it too close in terms of money?
3) What kind of things will I need, to furnish the apartment but probably not think of?
4) If you ever made any mistakes in moving out, and wish you could correct those mistakes, what would these be?
5) If you just have any general advice, what is it?

Thanks in advance!
