When does he need this system because in ~6 week Major price drops are coming from Intel and AMD is sure the counter them with competitive pricing. Conroe also will be coming out.

When I built my rig initially I skimped on GPU and Memory. One of my goals was to build a good gaming rig. I quickly found that I should have invested more in the GPU and memory.

Originally I went with a budget 6600, but now I have the 7600GT - which seems to be the sweet spot for price v. performance. AT recommends their latest Video Card Price Guide. They list some as low as $150AR.

For memory, I started off w/ 1GB, but really noticed a significant performance increase when I went to 2GB. I spent a little more, but well worth the extra $$.

Those would be my recommendations.

Yes, it would be best to wait 6-8 weeks for Core 2 Duo to arrive. However, if he just won't wait...

i would go a 7900gtx/x1900xt (whichever you can get a better deal on) & 2GB ram and then use the rest to build the system. when gaming the most important item is gpu/ram. you could even get a way with a 3000venice with those gpus.
