Advice Needed --> PS3!

I love my PS2. I play GH1,2,3, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and Katamari Damacy all the time. I currently have a blu-ray drive in my desktop, but it's a PIMA. Thinking of selling my PS2 hardware and my blu-ray drive to partially fund a PS3.

On Craigslist local someone's posted a PS3 80GB and claims it's PS2 compatible. Says it comes with motorstorm (bundled game with the CECHE01). Price is $360. This seems too good to be true!

Is this jump-able? I can probably get $150 for both the blu-ray drive and the PS2 locally, which means I'm paying $210 for this PS3. Worth it or no?

Anyone with a backward compatible PS3, is it worth it for PS2 games? I'm ready to have a better media solution, and $210 net for a bluray drive and new console seems good to me....

I have a BC 80gb PS3. I wasnt a big PS2 game player, I didnt own one and I still have to find the time to play the big hits.

I went back through and played all the MGS games, and was really only disappointed in MGS3 when the boss battle with the jet pack dude happened. Frame rates slowed to a crawl, and it took a lot of time to get through that battle. Take note, this is an exception. Also, I bet it wouldnt have been as bad as on a 20gb or 60gb system.

Theres quite a few games if you add in PS2 games which is a main thing hes looking at. Also seems to me he doesnt have a 360 so it will be a plus playing the games released on both systems.

Plus, I'm looking for a more viable option than blu-ray on my PC. It's annoying.

That's why he wants it PS2 compatible. Plus there's plenty on that console by now. Not much on exclusives, but if the OP doesn't have a 360 then he has tons of cross platform games to play.

Personally, if I wanna save money, I would get a Sony credit card, use the $150 credit on a PS3 80GB core from Sony Style. But that's just me. I regret getting the 80GB MGS4 bundle. The thing runs loud and gets toasty real fast. I thought I wanted the BC compatibility and flash media reader, but after owning it for 3 months, I played PS2 games maybe 1 time and never used the flash reader. I went ahead and got a new 80GB core, much better decision for someone who already owns a PS2.

Ps. My Comcast digital cable box runs hotter than the new 80GB PS3.

i went off and bought a newer ps3.. after really really considering an older 60gb. to be honest, unless your hardcore into playing ur olds ps2 games, which i do from time to time. i have the ps2 sitting next to the ps3, the PS3 alone has some worthy features. its a blu-ray player,stand alone Media center "computer" maybe not a super great one. but u can load videos on it. u can replace the HDD on it, and its a decent game system. so i cant complain, built in wi-fi.

remember u can charge ur controllers anywhere really. any usb port will do. i charged my controller on my laptop

I'm still happy with my 60 GB PS3, but I'd vote for keeping the PS2 and getting a brand-new 80 GB model with no BC.

- the older 80 GB model has lesser BC than the 60 & 20 GB models
- the new models use less power and run a little quieter, though my 60 GB is already quiet.
- you get a 1-year warranty, 2 years if you use a CC that doubles warranty
- you can get $150 off if you sign up for the Sony/Chase CC (= $250 + tax?)
- out-of-warranty repeair is $149 and the blu-ray drive does fail.

Alas, I already have a Sony Card. The main reason I'm looking to get rid of the PS2 is lag and PQ issues. But maybe getting a set of component cables would help with that?

Lag: does your TV have a direct mode / game mode to turn off its image processing?

Also, lag in what? From what I've read PS2 Guitar Hero games don't work well on PS3s, even the 20GB/60GB, because of controller issues.

PQ: component cables are worth trying, especially if that's what you'd use to connect the PS3 -- the same AV cables are used for both if you aren't using a standard HDMI cable instead.

Seems like a issue with your ps3. I have the MGS4 bundle and no issues like that

You could be right, I could've gotten a dud. However, after reading that 90nm versus 65nm PS3 thread at slickdeals forum, I'm not so sure. It's obvious the PS3 in the MGS4 bundle has a 90nm core. Compared to the new 80GB, it uses from 35-38% more voltage. The 90nm PS3's fan is on all the time, with volume that's noticeable when watching movies, blasting out hot air from the side vent. This is confirmed by many MGS4 PS3 users on many forums. The 65nm PS3 fan is barely audible, and temperature stays low after multiple hours of Folding@Home.

Me either! In fact, after reading so many post like Baked lately, I got paranoid, and decided to test the fans in my PS3. My controllers needed to be charged Friday, so I thought that was the perfect time to do it.

Mines sits in an open tv stand, right below my DLP, and next to a DTV receiver. It has plenty of breathing room, so I put it in a garbage bag, and let the demo for MLB08 the show run. I was going to let it run for 4-5 hours or so, but I forgot about it, and it ended up being 12.

When I got to it the next morning, I couldn't believe how loud it was. It was on par with my jet engine 360, if not louder. I got scared, and ripped it out of the bag, then turned on the tv. The Show was still playing, so I was happy. I turned it off, and haven't touched it since, but I'm hoping it goes back to it's normal noise level.

I want to buy another MGS4 bundle. Is anyone still selling them?

Hmm, I'll have to check on the direct mode / game mode. It's a Samsung LN40A530, I've only had it for about 2 months now.

Lag is in Guitar Hero indeed. So bad that I went from being able to complete almost any song on expert to not being able to complete half of the songs. At all.

I'd use an HDMI if I got a PS3, but right now I'm using composite for my PS2.
