Hello! I need advice on whether or not I can keep my current PSU which is: 500 Watt be quiet! Pure Power L8 Non-Modular 80+ Bronze.

My current set up is:

AMD FX 6300 not overclocked
owerColor Radeon HD 7950 PCS+
2x4 GB DDR3
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
USB Keyboard and Mouse
1 Optical drive
2 SSDs
1 SATA HDD
1 WIFI PCI Card
4 140 mm case fans

I am going to be upgrading to:

Maximus VIII Ranger
i5-6600k (overclocked to hopefully 4.5 ghz)
2x8 GB DDR4
Geforce GTX 1070 overclocked to 2050 ghz boost
rest will stay the same

According to http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator I will need

Load Wattage: 657W
Recommended Wattage: 707W
Amperage: +3.3V: 10.6A, +5V: 10.5A, +12V: 51.6A
Recommended UPS Rating: 1200VA

However, according to http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/ my current power supply is more than enough ->
Load Wattage: 342 W
Recommended PSU Wattage: 392 W

What do you guys think? Is the current one enough? I don't want to have to upgrade the PSU as well, if I don't absolutely have to.

Thanks for reading,

Penny

I take it your current setup is ~3 years old. That's not ancient, but it's not new either. It's got a three year warranty. I'd recommend a new power supply for the new build and saving your current one for troubleshooting/emergency duties.

Intel parts are more power efficient and the 1070 has a TDP of 150 watts. The CPU and GPU will consuming 300 watts combined (150+150) most of the time, with negligible consumption for other devices like storage, chipset, etc.

6600K won't consume much power even with overclocking. Something like 130W at max load, under 100W in typical gaming load. More or less the same as stock FX-6300.

Maximus VIII Ranger isn't a great buy IMO, cheaper Z170 boards like Asus Z170-A have almost all of the same features and OC just as well.

Why not wait for i5-7600K and Z270 boards though? Should OC better than 6600K.

I agree with all of this. I have a Sandy Bridge rig with 2x GTX 970 SLI with a 650W PSU. I'm "almost finished" building a Skylake 6700K with a Gigabyte GTX 1070 Mini-OC. It, too, has a 650W Seasonic.

Torn Mind and TemjinGold are both wise about this. I'd say use the Outervision calculator, maybe add 100W to its estimate, and pick your PSU. I can't imagine Outervision being that much out of whack from the other estimate you quoted. Perhaps, attention to data entry is called for there . . .
