Hi,

If anyone can please advise for a good value upgrade? I play games, but don't need them to be in absolute top resolution, so looking for what is best bang for buck kind of thing.
I keep getting blue screen in Windows 10, and just today it disabled the GPU (ATi HD 5800). Looks like the GPU is gone/going... although a driver roll back got it working again. But in any case it probably needs an upgrade, so looking for advice as I have no idea any more. This is my setup, it was a good setup 7 yrs ago:

System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: EX58-UD5
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
Memory: 12288MB RAM
Card name: AMD Radeon HD 5800 Series
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Chip type: AMD Radeon Graphics Processor (0x6898)
DAC type: Internal DAC(400MHz)
Device Type: Full Device
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6898&SUBSYS_0B001002&REV_00
Display Memory: 4850 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1010 MB
Shared Memory: 3840 MB

Appreciate the help.

if your resolution is 1080p or below and you dont need real high image settings, i suggest a 1060 3gb or a Amd 470 , whichever is cheaper where you live.

i would overclock your cpu if you can.

If you'll likely keep this GPU as long as the last one I would spend the extra money on the 6GB 1060 (probably better on a weak CPU and uses less power) or a AMD 480 8GB (Could potentially be stronger in DX12 in the future and has 2GB more VRAM). You may get a new monitor or CPU in the next 7 years! GL.

I would get a 1060 6GB, not the 3GB version if you're keeping your current CPU. If you're thinking about a total platform upgrade then I'd consider both the 1060 6GB and 480 8GB if your gpu budget is in the $250 zone

thanks... out of interest what is the fastest processor i can put in the motherboard i have?
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: EX58-UD5

perhaps in a month or 2 i may upgrade the cpu, but not going to be chaning the mb. I'll be ordering one of these cards, don't think i'll need anything with more power, as was doing ok with the old 5800 and kids means i don't play too often anymore. As long as it runs Civ6 & Pro evo i'll be satisfied.

There is no better CPU you can buy for that board however you can overclock your current CPU to transform it into something completely different. All you need to do is purchase a $30-50 CPU cooler. People here will easily guide you on how to actually overclock so that's not a problem at all.

Once you do that and get an RX 480 8GB you will be sitting with a pretty good gaming PC.

Not true.

You can buy 6 core Westmere Xeons for that socket that overclock really well. In fact, X58 boards are almost as expensive (or more expensive) than they were new on eBay right now for this exact reason. They're pretty inexpensive. One of those overclocked will be quite competent still for gaming today. Check out this thread in the CPU section: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/xeon-l5639-overclocking-on-x58.2335636/

What is your budget?

Probably the 6gb GTX 1060 or 8gb RX 480 to last you as long as you have tolerated that 58xx.

The RX 470 8gb (or even 4gb?) for long life and a bit cheaper.

Don't consider the 3gb "1060." You can get the same relative performance for the same relative price with the 4gb 480 or 470 on a card that will be relevant beyond the 6 month life of the VRAM limited, scaled down, 3gb "1060".

Oh--you said you don't care about fancy settings, or just resolution? If you don't care about quality textures, then you can probably get by with the 3gb 1060...but it's still a bad idea if value is important to you. the 8gb 470 will still keep you going for longer with newer games over the next several years that just might be crushing VRAM on even medium to high settings.

If your target is ~$250, then you can't go wrong with the 1060 6gb or 480 8gb (Assuming you can find them at those prices)

You want an x5677. They can be found on ebay for $60. It should easily overclock to 4.0GHz. It would be a massive performance boost. Update your BIOS to the latest version.

Just getting around to this now.
1. I'm about to go for the gtx 1060 6gb. Does it matter which brand? They are all around the GBP250 mark, some are OC some not.
2. My budget is probably another £150. For cpu i'll give the OC profile in the bios a try, the pc was bought from overclockers.co.uk but i turned the profile off years ago as never needed it. The Xeon x5677, that is a 4core right (found a cheap one on ebay)? Is there a 6core you can recommend for the board (ex58-ud5), assuming that the 6core has much bigger performance.
3. Would it make much difference to add another 12gb ram, i think the board has 6 slots and currently using 4gb x3.

Thanks!

With that chip I think a 480/1060 would be overkill, I would go with a 470 or 460.

I'd go for the 1060 6GB. I know it might be overkill for that CPU, but if you do decide to upgrade the mobo and cpu in the future, you'd have a good GPU to go with it without having to upgrade again.

1060 3GB is garbage, every single new game that has been tested in the last 2 months uses 4+ gigs of vram. So that card is essentially dead on arrival. The RX 470 4gb is better option, but again considering it costs $190 at the cheapest with better versions at $200 or more, than investing just $20 more and getting 480 4gb is better.

That said if you can find a custom 1060 6gb for $270 go for it. Unfortunately those are the cheapest non reference cards.

Xeon x5677 is 4 core I think, the highest frequency model on that architecture I believe. Check the thread I linked earlier. There are quite a few cheap overclockable 6 cores out there too.
