Advice for Athlon XP 3200+

I just ordered an Athlon XP 3200+ for my A7N8X board (with Geil PC3200), and was wondering if anyone has had experiences (good or bad) overclocking them. I haven't been able to find a lot of success stories for this chip, so hopefully you can post a few (or at least some horror stories, if that is all the chip is good for). Thanks.

Well, there's not much wiggle room for that chip, since it's already running at a 400Mhz fsb. By overvolting and extreme cooling, you may get 2.4 or even up to 2.5 out of it, but certainly no more than that. I bought a 3000+ a while back, and it runs fine at 11.5x400fsb - but so do the 2 2600+s I have, so I doubt I'd again spend the extra money on the higher end chip.

If you are still within the time frame allowed I'd return/cancel it and get a 2500. You can get it close if not better than what the 3200 can do oc'd and save some $$.

True, for that money I would get the 3000+, for the money he would get for his A7N8X he could get a decent A64 motherboard for only about $30 bucks. Either go A64 or get a 2500+

True, for that money I would get the 3000+, for the money he would get for his A7N8X he could get a decent A64 motherboard for only about $30 bucks. Either go A64 or get a 2500+

That's by far the best advice. Get a 2500+. It will easily last you a year, and by that time A64 CPU's (especially the FX range) will be far cheaper and faster. A 2500+ will suit your needs for a good while. For the gamer, it's the GPU that is worth spending more money on at the moment. Even a modest CPU cuts it nowadays with a 9800/PRO. A 2500+ overclocked to 3200+ or beyond will be juuuust fineeee!:beer:

yeah it should be. Unles AMD pulls an Intel and delays their newest chip for over a year because they just can't get it cool enough, LOL.

I think it is not the end, in the AMD roadmap there are some new cores for the Athlon XP with 32 Bits, the Paris and Palermo cores, should be realeased during next year 2005 and the lasts of 2004, may be i am wrong but they are in the roadmap so if the don't change it they should appear, the paris core is 130nm while the Palermo is 90nm with the new 90nm technology i've heard comments about using Multi-Threading in Athlons XP Processors, and... multi-threading is not the same as hyper-threading, it's much better, it would have 2 phisics core the most accerted way to call 2 processors in one, or... the unique way avaliable to do so.

You English is just fine, as long as you keep the good info flowing! I guess the question is will these new technology XP processor be pin compatible with the current motherboards? If not, I'm not sure that I'd instead want to migrate to one or both of the A64 platforms instead.

I thought all the new xps were going to be A64s that were limited to 32 bit rather than 64 and were on the 754 (or what ever its pin count is) mobos?

Thats what I saw too. I have seen no info on the origional socket A in the road maps.

I believe it's much better to buy an Athlon XP 2500+ Barton and wait till the 64bits plattform gets cheapper... I saw a lot of histories at other foruns about succesfully overclocked 2500+ to 3200+...

Socket A is done, but the Athlon XP is not. It will continue to live in socket 754 packaging for another year or so, "as market requires."
