advice about laptop hd

hi,
i'm wondering if anyone could give me a bit of advice on laptop hard drives. i'm looking to upgrade, as my 5 gb hd is getting full, but the dell hd i ordered has been on backorder for months, so i was thinking of ordering from someone else. BUT- dell has got me a bit apprehensive because they keep saying they don't support other manufacturers hd's (obviously) and that theirs are so much better, blah,blah,blah.
so, i'm wondering if is should keep waiting or cancel my order and look elsewhere. i mean, for a desktop you can get a hd almost anywhere so i'm thinking that i shouldn't be so apprehensive about laptop parts. any thoughts? and does anyone know of a good online place to find laptop hd's. thanks.

get an IBM travelstar ;o)

do a search in the forums, there are lots of people selling notebook HD's

This is the wrong forum, but do a quick search and you'll find tons of reasonably priced Lappy HDDs.

IBM travelstar all the way
avoid hitachi (dell's standard) like the plague - the break a lot, bad sectors almost guaranteed
avoid toshiba - slow, breaks a lot.

Negegg has the 20Gig travelstars for about $109 last time I checked.

i thought fujitsu HD's were standard on dell lappys? on the past 2 i have had they have had fujitsu's...anyways..i would cancel the order from dell...and order an IBM, besides a lappy HD not being under warranty from dell isn't that big of deal because they are relatively cheap and easily replaced.

thanks for the advice everyone. sounds like the travelstar is a way better deal. sorry about the inappropriate post. im new at this posting stuff :}

daveh is selling a 20 gig travel star for $129 shipped i believe on this forum. the best drives are the new 32 and 48 gig 5400 rpm travelstars. I wish i could replace my 10 gig travelstar with on, but tey are $300 and $600 respectively and i'd be broke.

Wrong forum but...

Just replace the existing HD with whatever.. you will just have replace it into the caddy or whatever retaining mechanism there is for the HD.

I would avoid Fujitsu 🙂 I've had the odd problem with their desktop drives, and I was working at a laptop OEM once... and out of say 250 laptops I had a stack of about 15 dead Fujistu laptop HDs that failed when I tried to ghost the image onto them 🙂
