Adventures with an AMD CPU and Motherboard purchase...

I checked my local Fry's ad this last Monday and what did I see a sale on an AMD Athlon II X3 435 and a Gigabyte Motherboard GA-MA78LM-S2 for $79.99 with a $10.00 MIR. :awe: The sale was good until Dec. 31, 2009. The regular price for the CPU alone was $89.99.
Had to wait till today to get the combo so tonight I called two stores that were close to me, their response was "Sorry sold out." I called a store that was very close to the coast, an hour+ away, their response "Sure we have plenty of that combo." So off I dashed and boy did I dash to get there before closing time. Went directly to the computer parts dept. and got the printout for the combo, went to the register, and they brought me the AMD Athlon II X3 425. Wait I said the ad said 435 not 425. Sorry this is what was printed up. (The 425 was $79.99) They had a copy of Monday's ad and sure enough the ad said 435 so they gave me a $10 discount on the combo. I would have had to wait till tomorrow morning and drive all the way out there again to talk to a general manager to get the proper combo.^_^ I was tired and I had things planned for Thursday.
So I got the 425 and MB for 76.11 in total with the $10 MIR. Moral of the story check that print out prior to getting to the check out line. Hope other people picked up on that prior to leaving the store.

I live in Minnesota the land of Best Buy, with CompUSA and Circuit City gone I wish Fry's would expand. BB used to be good 20 years ago but now with the internet their prices are no longer competitive.

BB prices were cheaper on movies and music back then compared to Target, Musicland, Sam Goody, etc.

Further the internet enabled a cost savings to sellers like Amazon and Newegg who have less overheard due to no brick and mortar stores.

Sure I would like to have a Fry's near me too, but I make due with a nearby Microcenter, and the Egg is one day away by UPS Ground.

Gee, I didn't mean to start a debate about brick and mortar vs. online. In my experience certain online vendors are usually cheaper and relatively quick in shipping but sometimes if you are patient and keep a sharp eye on ads from brick and mortar computer parts stores you can find better deals and plus you have the benefit of same day service. Also if your purchase is defective you can return and exchange it that day.
I usually buy my parts online but I also keep a sharp eye on my local Fry's ads to see what is on sale. Once in awhile, not as often as they used to, Fry's will have one or two incredible deals that are unbeatable. But you have to be patient and know what you are looking for. I kind of prefer to buy my motherboards locally so if something is defective I can get it replaced right away.
