I just recently closed a deal w/ djicam, bought his Olympus D460Z. Really smooth transaction by the way ;)

Okay, so I just bought it on a spurt... GoldenBear has his Kodak, and I messed around w/ it at his house and it was really fun - so I decided to spend 200 dollars and get this.

What do you guys think? Are digital cameras one of those things that you just have a lot of fun w/ to begin w/ but begins to pick up dust?

I decided to get the camera because I figured that it'd be effficient - w/o having to get film all the time, and that the posting on the PC w/o a scanner idea was quite appealing to me as well :)

What do you guys think? Stick w/ the standard cams? Or the digitals one worth the shell out (they're quite affordable nowadays too) ;)

I actually use mine more than I thought I would, makes it easy to post pics. Whether it be here, or snapping a pic for an ebay auction, its so damn easy. Now I want one of those Sony ones that just writes to a CD-R, that is sweetness.

Yea they're great.

There are just some pics that Poloraids can't do justice for and yet the regular photo shop won't develop. :)

My soon-to-be digital camera! The Sony DSC-F707!
Although it is a bit on the expensive side for an amateur, I can't settle for lower picture quality! Just a few more paychecks! Photography is gonna be my hobby for a while with this baby, and no more need for film. Just imagine shooting thousands and thousands of pictures, and being able to store them on the computer/cd-r's! That would cost a fortune if you used film rolls! You only need to print ones you like!

i just got mine recently and i LOVE it. it's definitely worth it. mine also takes video clips and i've been having a lot of fun with that. i also post a lot of pics on the web tho so i think i make a lot more use out of it then most people. plus i always hated taking rolls of film and having all these useless pics lying around taking up space.

oh yeah, and check out this picture of the fishies in my back yard :)

it's kinda nice because you don't have to worry for the films.
I have a HP Photosmart 315, and with the 128mb memory card I can take 1000+ with 640x480 and about 300+ with 1600x1200 resolution.
So whenever I go out, I always take a lot of pictures. And I can delete the ones I don't like after I go home. It's nice to have it.
On the other hand, if you don't use camera much, it's not worth the few hundred $$.

It's a matter of use. For conveniance they just can't be beaten and the pictures are more than acceptable for most users. Even a cheap digital camera is excellent for party snaps and uploading to websites. Also the fact that you can see the pictures beforce uploading is great.

For purists most digital cameras cant touch a decent SLR in the hands of skilled photographer. Databack digital SLRs are certainly closing the gap, but it's at a price

When price comes down and quality improves i can't see a long future for 35mm snap cameras

Definitely - Full of quality, affordable, efficient

I carry it in my car. I carry it in my pocket. I take pictures on a whim. Picture yourself doing just that.

I mainly use my digital camera to grab textures for graphic art on the computer. Very convenient and easy to use. It's worth it for me :)

i have a Sony 505v. it's overpriced, and sweet. the replacement, 707v is coming out soon, and is much better. both have 5x optical.

what makes it worth while was that i went away to otakon, and took over 200 pictures (~1 MB each), some deleted. and i did not have one single roll of film to process. and i could look at the pics via the hotel room television (rca video out from camera). i recharged batteries in the hotel and stuff. =)

the more you spend, the better the camera will be. optical is everything. OPTICAL ZOOM is a must on any digital camera worth a damn.

--

for prosumers and professionals, the SLR cameras are a must. the professional cameras with interchangeable lenses are a must.

--

but there are of course added costs: extra batteries (and perhaps charger), additional filters (ie uv protective; polarizing), extra memory, a bag, tripod, slave flash, etc.

the newer high end cameras blow previous cameras away in terms of optical zoom, and megapixel.

my digital camera is a d460 and I like it since I use it a lot when posting pictures online....

I guess a digital camera is only fun if you get to use it a lot! Like if you are in an school group, and have a website

Love that shot huma - great lighting and scenery... lights and shadows play off each other in the darkness really well ! :) What kind of camera were you using for that shot?

Don't most affordable cameras nowadays come w/ an optical zoom, that is to say the 2x/3x thing-a-mig-jig right? I could be wrong though, I'm still in the process of learning more about this :)

Thanks GoldenGuppy.

I took that with an Olympus 2020z. What I really want though is an olympus 2040z, which is better in low light and has usb and audio in movie mode.

Only did minor photoshop editing. Dropped the levels in the sky to darken it a touch (mainly for mood, the original was neat too).

For quality photos, I use a Pentax SLR with a tripod and flash. I have total control over light exposure, depth of field, and shutter speed. 100x's better photos than any digital or cheap automated camera (ie the elf). These are photographs that can be blown up to 5x7 and still look crisp.

obviously, w/ an SLR you'll have a lot more control for a lot less price (digial slr: $3k :) And that's only for the canon...)

Really depends on what you plan on doing. They're still a bit pricy for the quality (1.3mp is the ABSOLUTE minimum i'd go)..
altho if you find the deals, it's nice.

For me, i like to have my pics on the computer.. anything i find i need to give out or want to have hard copies, i can pick.
Being a computer oriented person, I do that. Otherwise, you might be better off the other way.

However, control is nice, and SLR is the only way to go.. but digital is too spensive.. for me, i'll lose a little on the control and lens
options and lear w/ what i gots (nothing right now tho.. doh), then move on to pick something better down the road.

I think the digital camera was way worth it. My first one was a HP c200 and then we went to a C315, and finally my wife wanted a Sony DSC S75 which is way better. At first she was kinda bummed cause she wanted real photos as well. So now, we use ofoto and dotphoto to get our pictures 'printed' and they look great! If you get a camera now, at least get a 2.1 mp to 3.1. I am thinking now of getting a 4mp camera.

I love my Canon S10. I can shoot pics all day long without worrying about film & development costs. Plus, with software like PhotoShop you can really step back into the "dark room," which is something you can't do as easily with film-based P&S cameras. Since going digital, I've just felt a whole lot more freedom to be creative.

Click on My Web Site in my sig to see pics I've taken.

digital cameras are a blast if you have something to shoot. Being a college kid, I have plenty of uses... :)

Well, I kinda think I own a digital camera.

See, I bought a referbed Toshiba 2.3 mega pixel frome eCost on 7/7/01. When it came it was broken. They don't take them back. I talked to the girl at the repair place and it should be done today. I can't wait.
