Advantages of 4MP Digicam over 3MP?

Assuming all features (Optical zoom, movie mode etc) are the same, is there really much image quality advantage of a 4 megapixel camera over a 3 megapixel camera? I know the 4MP can probably produce better 8x10 photo prints, but how often is that going to happen anyway? Anyone know of other reasons to go 4 over 3?

Depends on what you need it for. 3mpx will do fine for 8.5x11 prints, but you may want more megapixels for larger prints.

More megapixels can sometimes be a bad thing. For example, the 4mpx Canon S45/G3 cameras arguably produce better images than the 5mpx S50/G5 cameras because the lens size is better suited to the 4mpx sensor size.

I remember last year when everyone was saying 2 megapixel was more than enough.

If you like to crop and enlarge images, your better off getting the 4mp one. Providing everything elso is equal
(lens,optical zoom ect)

I really want to upgrade my Olypmus D510 (2.1MP) to a A70 but just cant convince myself that a 2.2 to 3.2 megapixel
increase is worth it.

My budget is somewhere between 250 and 400 at this point...obviously prefer the lower, but not at the cost of having to upgrade in a year or so. I am looking closely at the A70 also, but the A80 seems attractive too, for the 4MP. BUT I also like some of the cameras with 6-10x optical zoom (olympus and fuji come to mind). I know the A70 is a fav around AT, anyone use the A80?

I like the G3...but I can't see myself putting out over $500 right now. I like the size of the A70, small enuf to fit in a jacket pocket but not too small for my big hands. I think the G3 is pretty big, no?

The A80 is fairly new. There may be a few people over at the DPreview.com Canon Forum who can comment on it. In order to get 6-10x optical zoom, you'd have to get a digital SLR and a good telephoto lens. Any camera with 6-10x zoom will be expensive, well out of your price range.

I'd consider the Canon S45 at $348. But go with the A80 if you prefer AA batteries and that swivel LCD.
