ADSL routers and gaming

We have 2 PCs at home, and share our ADSL connection between them using Win2k internet connection sharing.

The problem is that internet multi-player games are not playable on the PC without the modem.

I would like to replace the modem with a router as this will give more flexibility as well as provide firewall protection, but am I going to run into problems with gaming? What about older games like the Quake family?

You won't have any issue. You might have to set some routing in the router itself, but that's not painful.

The way you have it setup can work with some tweaking, if I'm understanding you correctly. What games require the modem? If you have them sharing the inet connection, they can both get out to connect. Maybe you could fill us in more?

You wouldn't be configuring any routing but you would either have to open up ports or port forward. Pretty easy and should be described in detail in the manual of any SOHO router you purchase.

"Router is much recommended for DSL even if you have only One Computer."

What Jack said, times ten. Much smoother connection should help with gaming, not hurt!!
