Some of the cats my parents got (I knew a total of 6 cats while living at home) were from a relative who has a farm. The cats there are of course for rodent control.
One, possibly two, of those were strays. Two managed to get outside and were hit by cars when I was little (not a busy road either, maybe 100 cars a day). The third of that particular group (who was from the farm) lived to age 17, and was euthanized due to a very large tumor.
Then we got two kittens from the same farm; one lived to about age 15. He died due to complications caused by what was most likely a stroke. His sister is still going, and is 17 now.
Maybe.....oh, I don't know, 6 years ago, we adopted a cat from a neglectful, to the point of abusive, owner. The cat was kept in a small bathroom; its litter box would go well over a month without being cleaned. And it had hyperthyroidism, so it wasn't in good shape to begin with.
We got this cat and gave her two baths. She purred the whole time and never struggled a bit. And she was quite exceedingly sociable.
